Fullerton, CA - The Hope International men's and women's track and field team wrapped up competition at the GSAC Championships on Friday at SOKA University in Aliso Viejo, CA. The men took fifth place overall while the women did not have enough athletes for a team but
Lupe Mata and
Jazmin Zambrano competed individually.
Daniel Perez continued to improve with two personal records in the 800-meter dash (1:57.00), and the 1500-meter dash (4:03.00) on Friday. His prelim time qualified him for the final in the 800 time where he finished in third place out of nine runners with a 1:57.5. Caleb Ornelas finished right behind Perez in the finals with a 1500-meter time of 4:05.00. Andy Avalos finished strong in the prelims in the 1500-meter dash (4:44.00) and 800-meter dash (2:22.00). Senior, Diego Pineda finished strong at the prelims in the 800-meter dash (2:07.00), and came back to the finals to run the 5000-meter dash with an impressive time of 17:05.00.
Lupe Mata led the women to make the finals in the 1500-meter dash. She first finished the prelims with a 15 second personal record in 5:06.00. In the finals she kept her strong performance and finished with a time of 5:10.00. Jazmin Zambrano made an impressive show at the Javelin making the finals and setting a new record at 18.95. Zambrano also competed in the 1500-meter dash with a time of (6:11.00).
The Royals will continue their season on Friday, May 2 at the Steve Scott Invitational at UC Irvine in Irvine, CA.
