Royals Drop Another Close One to Spirit

Surprise, AZ - The Hope International University women's basketball team (6-11, 0-5 GSAC) are still looking for their first conference win of the season as they dropped a close one 62-55 on Saturday afternoon on the road in Surprise, AZ.

The Spirit came out fast as they took an early 8-2 lead. The Royals fought back to make it 10-9 with a big three from Natalie Acuna midway through the first. The Spirit responded to take a 17-13 lead at the end of the first. The Spirit quickly seized control to start the second as they built a 32-16 lead with 3:16 to go. The Royals quickly came to life as they answered on a 11-0 run led by five points from Acuna to pull within 32-27 at halftime.

The Spirit upped their advantage to 35-27 to start the third but the Royals kept their comeback going on as a layup by Faith Brinkman and a free throw by Amira Austin tied the game 36-36 with 2:49 to go. The teams then exchanged baskets as Long nailed a clutch three to tie it 39-39 at the end of the third. The teams continued to battle it out to start the fourth as a layup by Brinkman put the Royals up 42-41. That lead would be shortlived though as the Spirit took control as the Royals fell 62-55. Austin led the Royals with 16 points.

The Royals return home for more GSAC action as they host Embry-Riddle on Thursday, January 23 at 5:30 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
