Royals End Five Game Slide With 60-48 Win Over Eagles

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (7-11, 1-5 GSAC) won their first conference game of the season and ended a five games losing streak as they took down the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Arizona Eagles 60-48 on Thursday evening at home in the Darling Pavilion.

The Royals started quickly on a 9-0 run led by five points from Aliyah Gonzalez and four points from Amira Austin to take an early lead. Faith Brinkman then nailed a three to put the Royals up 11-2 but the Eagles came right back to tie it 11-11 at the end of the first. Jada Long then drained a three to spark an 8-2 run to open the second as the Royals went up 19-13 with 8:32 to go. The Eagles would come storming back to take a 22-19 lead but the Royals closed out the half on a 9-2 run started off by back to back layups from Calla Anderson and finished off by another three from Brinkman to put the Royals ahead 28-24 at halftime.

The Eagles continued to cause problems for the Royals as they came back to it 28-28 to start the third. Two more threes by Brinkman and Gonzalez put the Royals back up 34-28 but once again the Eagles came back to tie it 34-34 with 6:14 to go. The teams then traded baskets as the score was all tied 38-38 at the end of the third. The Eagles would take the lead to start the fourth but the Royals answered on an 11-3 run led by five points from Gonzalez to take a 49-43 lead with 3:29 to go. The Eagles would get back within 49-45 but Gonzalez answered with another three to put the game away as the Royals hit all their free throws down the stretch to seal an important 60-48 win. Gonzalez led the Royals with 21 points while Brinkman added 14.

The Royals continue GSAC action on the road as they head to nearby San Dimas, CA to take on Life Pacific on Saturday, January 25 at 5:30 PM.
