Royals Fall Late to No. 13 Firestorm

Glendale, AZ - The Hope International University women's basketball team (6-10, 0-4 GSAC) dropped their fourth GSAC game as they fell 74-60 to the No. 13 Arizona Christian University Firestorm on Thursday evening on the road in Glendale, AZ.

The Royals jumped out to an early 10-3 lead with two big threes from Faith Brinkman. The Firestorm would quickly rally to make it 10-9 but once again Brinkman nailed a huge three to put the Royals up 15-9 with 5:28 to go. The Firestorm would comeback to take a 17-16 lead before the Royals answered with a three from Jada Long to go back up 20-16 with 1:46 to go. Amira Austin then knocked down two late free throws to give the Royals a 22-18 lead at the end of the first. The Firestorm quickly rallied to tie it 26-26 but the Royals regained control as another three from Long put them up 33-29 midway through the quarter. The Firestorm once again cameback to retake a 37-33 lead but the Royals had the final say as Long found Aliyah Gonzalez for a big three to pull within 37-36 at halftime.

The teams exchanged baskets to start the third before a three point play from Gonzalez and a layup by Mia Heidt put the Royals back ahead 46-42 with 6:37 remaining. The time it was the Firestorm who rallied as they would take a 51-46 lead midway through the quarter. The Royals then answered with a 7-0 run finished off by a Gonzalez three point play to take a 53-51 lead but the Firestorm answered with a bucket to tie the game 53-53 at the end of the third. The Firestorm seized momentum in the fourth as they opened on an 11-0 run to take a 64-53 lead midway through the quarter. The Royals looked for an answer but couldn't muster up another rally as they fell 74-60. Gonzalez led the Royals with 18 points.

The Royals continue GSAC action on the road as they travel a short distance to Surprise, AZ to take on OUAZ on Saturday, January 18 at 11:00 AM.
