Royals Falter Late Against Mountaineers

Caldwell, ID - The Hope International University women's basketball team's (2-2) dropped their second game in Idaho as they fell 81-73 to the Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers on Saturday afternoon on the road in Caldwell, ID.

It was a back and forth start to the game with the teams exchanging leads as Aliyah Gonzalez drained a three to put the Royals up 9-8 midway through the first. The Mountaineers would then take the lead before the Royals answered on a 7-0 run with big threes from Jada Long and Keira McNamee to take a 17-10 lead with 2:20 to go. The Mountaineers would rally to pull within 18-14 but McNamee nailed another three to put the Royals ahead 21-14 at the end of the first. The Royals upped their margin to ten to start the second with a big three from Alexandra Trasara and a bucket by Long to make it 26-16 with 8:14 left. The Mountaineers came storming back to outscore the Royals 18-2 as they took a 34-28 lead with 1:44 to go. The Royals then responded with three points from Amira Austin as they trailed 34-31 at halftime.

The Royals continued their momentum to start the third as they used back to back threes from Long and Casey Fust to regain a 41-38 lead with 7:21 to go. The game was then a battle as the Mountaineers came back to tie it four times while the Royals tied it twice before taking a 56-55 lead on a big three by Faith Brinkman to make it 56-55 with :37 seconds to go. The Royals defense then held on while Austin hit a late free throw to put the Royals up 57-55 at the end of the third. The Mountaineers tied the game to start the fourth but the Royals answered as the teams exchanged baskets with the Mountaineers then taking a 62-61 lead. The Royals then responded to take a 70-65 lead with a pair of free throws by Mia Heidt with 4:33 left. The Mountaineers then came storming back as they closed out the game on a 16-3 run as the Royals fell 81-73. Gonzalez led the Royals with 17 points. 

The Royals return to action at home as they host Bushnell on Tuesday, November 12 at 5:30 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
