Royals Can't Hold Late Lead Fall to Beacons in Overtime

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team's (2-3) couldn't hold a late lead as they fell 81-74 in overtime to the Bushnell University Beacons on Tuesday evening at home in the Darling Pavilion.

The Royals got off to a good start as they opened on a 7-2 run led by five points from Faith Brinkman. The Beacons would pull within 9-6 but the Royals answered with a three by Jada Long to take a 12-6 lead midway through the first. The Beacons would make it 15-12 before the Royals closed the half on an 8-2 run started by a Mia Heidt three point play as they took a 23-14 lead at the end of the first. The Royals continued their momentum into the second as they extended their lead to 10 with a bucket by Alexandra Trasara to take a 29-19 lead with 5:22 left. The Beacons though came racing back to tie the game 34-34 with :33 seconds left but the Royals got the final say as Calla Anderson hit a late free throw to put the Royals back ahead 35-34 at halftime. 

The teams exchanged leads to start the third with the Beacons taking a 42-40 lead with 6:16 remaining. The Royals quickly answered with back to back threes from Brinkman and Long as they extended their lead to 49-42 with 3:57 to go. The Beacons would quickly answer with a three but the Royals held them off as they took a 55-50 lead at the end of the third. The Beacons tried to come back as they made it 58-56 but the Royals kept scoring as a layup by Alexandra Trasara put them back up 63-58 midway through the fourth. The Beacons kept coming as they made it 67-66 but Casey Fust nailed a three to put the Royals back up 70-66. The Royals couldn't hold the lead as they turned it over and the Beacons took advantage to tie the game 70-70 and force overtime.

The Beacons took the lead to start overtime but the Royals kept it close early on as Amira Austin cut it to 75-74 with 2:24 to go. The Royals tried to take the lead back but the Beacons were to much as the Royals fell 81-74. Brinkman and Trasara led the Royals with 15 points each. 

The Royals continue action at home with an exhibition against Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, November 16 at 1:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
