Royals Start Season Strong With 69-52 Win Over Golden Eagles

Fullerton, CA The Hope International University women's basketball team's (1-0) opened their season with a commanding 69-52 win over the La Sierra University Golden Eagles on Tuesday evening in their home opener in the Darling Pavilion.

The Royals got off to a quick start with back to back threes from Faith Brinkman and Aliyah Gonzalez as part of a 15-1 run with 10 points from Gonzalez. The Golden Eagles would cut it to 17-5 but the Royals quickly answered with a dagger three by Jada Long to go up 20-5 with 3:35 to go. The Golden Eagles would respond to cut the Royals lead to 22-12 at the end of the first. The Golden Eagles would start the second with a bucket to make it 22-14 but the Royals quickly answered on an 8-0 run finished off by another three from Gonzalez to extend their lead to 30-14 with 6:05 to go. The Golden Eagles would respond to make it 32-19 but the Royals answered with a 7-0 run led by five more points from Gonzalez to stretch their lead to 39-19 with a minute to go. The Golden Eagles would counter with two late free throws as the Royals took a 39-21 halftime lead.

The teams traded buckets to start the quarter before the Royals went on a 6-0 run capped off by a Mia Heidt layup to extend their lead to 49-28 with 6:41 to go. The Golden Eagles kept fighting as they made it 49-33 midway through the quarter but the Royals closed out the quarter on a 9-2 run as they took a 58-35 lead at the end of the third. The Royals continued to extend their lead to start the fourth as a jumper by Alexander Trasara gave them their largest lead 65-39 with 8:00 minutes to go. The Golden Eagles didn't give up easily as they rallied to close the gap but the Royals didn't allow a big comeback as they prevailed 69-52. Gonzalez led the Royals with 20 points going 4-for-9 from the three point line while Heidt recorded a double double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

The Royals continue action at home as they host the University of LaVerne on Friday, November 1 at 1:00 PM at home in the Darling Pavilion.
