Ochieng Leads Royals at GSAC Championships Leaping to National Qualifying Mark in Long Jump

Men's Day 1 GSAC Championships 
First year Track & Field athlete and Long Jump School Record Holder, Teddy Ochieng, improved on his personal best and school record in the long jump by over 18 inches to finish in 2nd place at the GSAC Championships and qualified for the NAIA National Championships.  On Ochieng's 3rd attempt of the competition in the preliminaries he jumped 23' 6¾" (7.18m).  Teddy also competed in the 400m and 200m and qualified for tomorrow's Finals in both.  The only other qualifier to the Finals on the Men's side was sophomore Michael Ventura in the 400m Hurdles finishing 2nd overall and running 57.57. 
 
The only other finals on Day 1 was the 10,000m.  Both Luis Diaz and Morgan Faunce ran the 10,000m for the first time this season.  Diaz ran the #7 time all-time in HIU history and became the #3 Fastest Runner at the distance with a time of 34:04.90, finishing in 12th place.  Faunce became the #5 Fastest runner at the 10,000m distance with his time of 36:22.01 finishing in 16th place.

Men's Day 2 GSAC Championships 
Ventura Nabs Silver and Runs Both Relays 
Sophomore Michael Ventura ran the #2 Fastest Time in School History and finished 2nd at the GSAC Championships in the 400m Hurdles.  Ventura ran a tough race starting strong and flying over the last two hurdles to finish just behind the winner with a time of 55.63.  Ventura was also on both 7th place relays running leg #2 on both the 4x100m Relay and the 4x400m Relay.

Teddy Ochieng will compete in the Long Jump next at the Oxy Invite on May 6th and at the NAIA National Championships on May 25th.
