Hope International Director of Athletics Chris Morrison today announced the hiring of Alvin Kim as head coach of the men's and women's tennis programs.
Kim brings a wealth of experience at the junior college level, having spent 14 seasons as the Cerritos College men's tennis coach as well as seven seasons with the women's program. He began his Falcon career by winning 34 straight South Coast Conference men's matches and stringing together four straight conference titles.
"Alvin Kim has a proven track record of achieving success and establishing stability with both men's and women's tennis programs," said Morrison. "His ability to recruit and develop players as well as build a healthy culture enabled him to shine through the hiring process and we are excited to have him join our Royals family."
His team finished 27-2 in his final season with the program in 2017. Kim posted an overall record of 215-71, which included 11 South Coast Conference titles and six state championships. In addition, he earned SCC Coach of the Year accolades eight times, as well as being named the 2008 All Sports Conference Coach Of the Year and 2016 Men's State Coach of the Year. In conference play, his teams went 92-9 overall.
On the women's side, Cerritos won the SCC title in all seven seasons Kim piloted the program. The Falcons captured four state titles and Kim earned six SCC Coach of the Year distinctions for his awards mantle. He also was named the 2016 All Sports Conference Coach of the Year. He collected an overall record of 87-56, including a 25-1 mark in 2016.
"I am deeply honored to accept the head coaching position for both Hope International tennis programs," said Kim. "There is a ton of potential here to build a sustainable winner and compete while embodying the values that Hope International stands for."
Additional coaching experience for Kim includes a stint as an assistant coach at Cal State Los Angeles, as well as the boys and girls varsity head coach at Cerritos High School. At Cerritos, his teams reached the CIF Finals five times and accumulated three CIF titles.
Kim played collegiately for two seasons at Cypress College and two more at Vanguard University.
He is accredited as a USPTA Elite P1 teaching professional.
A resident of La Mirada, Kim and his wife Minyoung have four children – Aidan, Tobin, Brennen and Haven.
