Extra Base Hits Power Royals Past Cal Poly Pomona

FULLERTON – Hope International baseball utilized the extra base hit to generate a majority of its offense in Saturday's 6-2 victory against Cal Poly Pomona at Amerige Park.

Southpaw Josh Landry also contributed a quality start, tossing six strong innings with just three hits allowed and six strikeouts. The senior struggled in the first inning when he allowed a pair of runs after loading the bases via a hit by pitch and a pair of walks. Christian Gomez took advantage with a two-run single to center field.

Landry yielded just two singles and two walks over the next five innings, with just one Bronco getting into scoring position.

HIU (7-5) did its damage in the middle innings, scoring two runs apiece in the fourth, fifth and sixth.

Hunter Essang, who made his first collegiate start, encountered a bases loaded situation in the fourth. His one-out double scored both Evan Jaquez and Henry Borjas as the Royals tied the game at 2-2.

With runners at the corners in the fifth, Jaquez roped a double down the left line to plate Borjas and Colby Moran for a 4-2 HIU lead.

Royce Clayton led off the sixth with a solo shot to right center, his third homer of the season. David Shackelford followed with a single, stole second and moved to third on a groundout. He scored the sixth HIU run as the Bronco left fielder committed an error on Matias Nolasco's offering.

The Broncos had an opportunity to rally in the seventh, but HIU reliever Luke Wallin got a double play with two runners aboard and no outs. Bryan Richman ran Cal Poly Pomona (5-4) out of the inning as his attempted steal of home failed.

Lucas Smith tossed two-thirds of an inning for the Royals, and Matthew Pinal went the final 1.1 innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout.

Landry got the win to move to 2-1 on the season. Matt Lorenzano fell to 0-2 with the loss, going 5.0 innings and yielding seven hits, four runs (three earned) with seven strikeouts.

Moran, Borjas and Essang had two hits each.

HIU and Cal Poly Pomona conclude the three-game series on Sunday at Scolinos Field with a noon first pitch.
