Royals Drop Series Finale to Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona scored two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth, handing the Hope International baseball team a 4-1 loss on Sunday at Scolinos Field.

HIU starter Franky Lopez retired nine of the first 11 Bronco batters and did not give up a hit until a leadoff single in the fourth. The Broncos loaded the bases with no outs but Lopez set down the next three hitters to keep them scoreless.

Lopez ran into some bad luck in the fifth. With two outs, the Broncos had runners on second and third. Tyler Garcia's ground ball to short was misplayed for an error, allowing Jack Sanders to score an unearned run. The Broncos plated their second unearned run on a Sebastian Arguelles single to left field.

The Broncos added two more runs in the sixth off HIU reliever William Aycock. Pinch hitter Ashton Romero singled, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. Daniel Ruiz's infield single brought in Romero as the Broncos took a 3-1 lead. Tyler Blade's RBI single made it 4-1.

HIU took a 1-0 lead in the third as Colby Moran doubled Matthew Pinal, who had reached on a fielder's choice, over to third. Evan Jaquez's RBI groundout scored Pinal.

The Royal bats stayed quiet until the eighth when Nathan Estrada's single to right scored Moran, who led off the inning with a walk. HIU had the bases loaded with no outs, but Cal Poly Pomona reliever Rex Jarcy got a strikeout and double play to end the threat.

HIU fell to 7-6 on the season, while the Broncos improved to 6-4.

HIU returns to action on Friday, hosting Westcliff for a single game at 4:00 p.m. The Tuesday game at Redlands has been canceled due to rain in the southern California area.
