Women’s Basketball Withstands Frantic Eagle Comeback

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – Hope International women's basketball ran its winning streak to 10 straight, posting a 66-62 victory against Embry-Riddle on Saturday at the Activity Center.

The Royals prevented the Eagles from overcoming a 21-point first half deficit as the hosts made a furious fourth quarter comeback, tying the game at 59-59 with 1:57 remaining. ERAU's Katie McBride scored 13 of her 16 points in the fourth period to spark the rally, but the Royals leaned on Amira Austin, Nicole Chuang and Dre Javier for key buckets down the stretch.

Austin posted her eighth double-double of the season with game-highs of 21 points and 15 rebounds. It marked the third time in the last four games that Austin corralled 15 rebounds, and represented her ninth consecutive game with double-digit caroms. She hit 9 of 12 shots while adding a pair of blocks.

Chuang and Javier each tallied 12 points. Aliyah Gonzalez chipped in 10 points on 4 of 6 shooting to go along with two blocks and two steals.

The Royals shot 66.7 (8 of 12) percent in the fourth period to offset ERAU's late attack. HIU finished at 46.3 (25 of 54) percent for the game.

HIU played solid defense for the first three quarters, limiting ERAU to 27.0 (13 of 48) percent efficiency. But the Eagles ramped up their offense in the final period, shooting 52.9 (9 of 17) percent.

HIU started off fast and built a 9-0 lead just three minutes into the game. The Royals posted their first double-digit lead at 17-7 following a jumper from Jamelia Coleman, and led 19-11 after one period.

Austin hit three straight buckets to begin the second quarter as the Royals led 25-13. Javier, Gonzalez and Jada Long followed with back-to-back-to-back triples, completing an 11-0 run and giving HIU its largest lead of the game – 21 points – at 34-13.

ERAU shot a paltry 2 of 13 in the second period as HIU outscored the hosts 18-9, and went into the locker room leading 37-20 at halftime.

The Eagles trailed 47-34 heading into the final quarter, and trailed 52-41 after Javier drained a three with 7:52 remaining. But a 16-5 ERAU run tied the score at 57-57, with McBride scoring 12 consecutive points during the rally.

McBride tied the score at 59-59 with 1:57 left, but Chuang countered with a layup to give HIU a two-point advantage. Following a missed three-point attempt by ERAU's Abby Dean, Austin got loose for an HIU layup to extend the lead to 63-59.

Makenzie Alapai's layup cut the deficit to 63-61 with 40 seconds on the clock. The Royals took time off the clock and Javier scored a crucial basket on a drive to extend the lead back to four.

ERAU missed two straight shots but drew a foul on the rebound attempt, with Jordyn Smith making 1 of 2 at the charity stripe to whittle HIU's lead to 65-62. But Chuang converted 1 of 2 at the line for HIU to ice the game.

HIU has a week off before returning to action on Saturday, January 24 for a noon home game against Park Gilbert.
