Women’s Basketball Ties School Record with 11th Straight Win

FULLERTON – Hope International built a 21-point first quarter lead and rolled to a 65-34 victory over visiting Park Gilbert in Great Southwest Athletic Conference action on Saturday from Darling Pavilion, tying the women's basketball program record with its 11th straight victory.

The 2021-22 Royals had two separate winning streaks of 11 games.

HIU put the clamps on Park Gilbert defensively, limiting the Buccaneers to 20.0 (14 of 70) percent shooting. Park Gilbert had gone 0 of 25 from three-point range when Eriana Begay knocked down a triple with 1:26 to go in the game.

The Royals shot a blistering 61.1 (11 of 18) percent in the first quarter to lead 28-7. Aliyah Gonzalez scored 11 of her game-high 20 points in the opening 10 minutes, hitting 4 of 5 floor shots and nailing all three of her three-point attempts.

The hosts led 14-2 less than four minutes into the game. Gonzalez drained back-to-back triples to push the lead to 28-5. HIU made 5 of 8 from distance in the quarter.

Park Gilbert scored just four points in both the second and third quarters, and the Royals led 54-15 after three.

The Royals sat most of their starters in the fourth quarter. Jamelia Coleman took advantage of the extra minutes, scoring seven points in the fourth.

Natalie Acuna added 11 points for the Royals. Coleman had nine points and Amira Austin chipped in eight. Angelina De Leon tied for game high honors with nine rebounds and also had three blocked shots.

About the only area HIU needed to shore up was in the rebounding department. Park Gilbert outrebounded HIU 55-40, collecting 24 offensive rebounds.

Jelissa Julmist led the Buccaneers (8-10, 3-6 GSAC) with 10 points in 18 reserve minutes.

HIU is now 14-3 on the season, and remains undefeated and in first place with an 8-0 GSAC record.

The Royals next host La Sierra on Tuesday, January 27 at 5:30 p.m.
