IRVINE, Calif. – Christopher Ferrufino notched his first career goal to lead the Hope International men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over previous GSAC unbeaten La Sierra on Tuesday at the OC Great Park.
The Golden Eagles fell to 5-1-1 overall and 3-1-0 in GSAC play, while the Royals improved to 3-3-4 and 2-2-1 in conference, ending a two-match skid.
Berlin Torres made four saves for HIU to post his second shutout and lower his goals against average to 0.97.
The Royals struck for the game's only goal at the 37:40 mark following a La Sierra foul. Isidro Rios lofted a free kick from 35 yards out into the box, where Ferrufino rose above a slew of defenders and directed his header into the upper left corner of the net.
Ferrufino also played a key role in preserving the lead as he blocked a shot by Vinicius Goncalves in the 63rd minute.
Torres also tipped a shot by Sean Palena over the crossbar with just under 20 minutes to play to stifle a game-tying attempt.
The Royals nearly took an early lead in the fifth minute as Diego Albanez's attempt hit the post.Â
Palena did the same midway through the first half, poking a 40 yarder that pinged off the right crossbar.
La Sierra held the 15-9 advantage in shots and led 5-1 in corner kicks. It was a physical match – with 44 fouls called – 24 on the Royals.
Abraham Perez made three saves for the Golden Eagles.
Rafa Gonzalez topped HIU with three shots.
The Royals return to action on Saturday against Life Pacific, with a noon kickoff scheduled at the OC Great Park.
