McWilliams and Boston Lead Royals in Late Comeback Knockout Win Against Patriots

Lewiston, ID - The No. 4 Hope International University baseball team (48-9) did it again as they rallied from six runs down to knock out the seventh seeded University of the Cumberlands Patriots 9-7 in a thrilling comeback win at Harris Field in Lewiston, ID on Tuesday afternoon.

Jesus Munguia got the start and pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing six runs on four hits while walking one. Chaz McWilliams picked up his second win in relief pitching 7 shutout innings allowing just three hits while walking four and striking out 11. Trotter Boston led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs and the go ahead home run.

The game was scoreless until the top of the second when Boston came up clutch with two outs with an infield single to put the Royals up 1-0. The Royals lead didn't last as the Patriots put up a seven spot in the bottom of the second to take a 7-1 lead. Gio Besio who had come in from the bullpen finally got the Royals out of the inning with a groundout and a flyout. With plenty of time left in the game the Royals didn't give up as Matthew Pinal and Colby Moran both launched solo home runs to pull the Royals within 7-3 in the top of the fourth.

McWilliams then came in from the bullpen to put up his best performance in a Royals uniform shutting down the Patriots offense including putting them down in order in the bottom of the seventh. The Royals then did what they did last year against Georgia Gwinnett putting together another rally as they loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the eighth. Pinal got things started with a fielder's choice to make it 7-5 before arguable the MVP of the tournament Boston blased a go ahead three run bomb to right field to put the Royals ahead 8-7.

The Patriots looked for an answer in the bottom of the eighth as they got a one out double and put the tying run on third but McWilliams held strong striking out the NAIA's all time home run hitter Charlie Muniz to get out of the inning. The Royals then added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Kyle Harvey ripped a one out RBI single to increase the Royals lead to 9-7. McWilliams then worked around a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth to seal the win and record the Royals 10th elimination game win in a row dating back to last year.

The Royals will have a day off and then take on the winner of Game 15 (LSU Shreveport vs winner of Georgia Gwinett vs Southeastern) on Thursday, May 29 at 6:30 PM at Harris Field in Lewiston, ID.
