Royals Take Down Cumberlands 10-4 to Open Avista NAIA World Series

Lewiston, ID - The No. 4 Hope International University baseball team (47-8) won their eighth game in a row and ninth in a row in Lewiston dating back to last season as they opened the Avista NAIA World Series with a 10-4 win over the seventh seeded University of Cumberlands Patriots at Harris Field in Lewiston, ID on Friday morning.

Trey Seeley got the start and pitched 4 innings allowing one run on two hits while walking two and striking out six. Chaz McWilliams (1-1) picked up his first win in relief pitching 2 innings allowing one unearned run on one hit while walking two. Trotter Boston led the Royals offense going 3-for-4 with 3 BIs.

Seeley struggled a little early on as the Patriots were able to squeak across a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Seeley then got a huge strikeout to limit the damage while the Royals were able to tie the game in the bottom of the second as Branden Chun-Ming ripped a triple and then scored on a two out RBI single by Trotter Boston to tie the game 1-1. Seeley then shutdown the Patriots over two more innings including retiring them in order in the top of the fourth. McWilliams would then come in from the bullpen in the fifth with the Patriots scoring one run on an error to take a 2-1 lead but he worked out of trouble getting a flyout to end the inning.

The Royals would strike back in the bottom of the fifth as David Shackelford ripped a single that turned into the tying run as the Patriots outfielders let the ball roll all the way to the wall to tie it 2-2. The Royals then took their first lead of the game as Kyle Harvey delivered a sac fly to make it 3-2. Later with two outs Colby Moran ripped a two out RBI single to increase the Royals advantage to 4-2. McWilliams then worked out of trouble in the top of the sixth while the Royals added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh with another clutch hit from Boston to make it 5-2.

The Patriots rallied in the top of the eighth as they got within 5-4 and put the go ahead run in scoring position but Mario Tostado came in from the bullpen to get a huge strikeout to end the inning. The Royals then blew the game open in the bottom of the eighth. With two on and nobody out Willson Dunn laid down a perfect bunt forcing an error to make it 6-4. Tostado then unleashed a two run double to centerfield to increase the lead to 8-4. Then with two outs Boston came through with a two run single through the right side to put the Royals up 10-4.

The Patriots tried to answer as they put two on with two outs in the top of the ninth but Jesus Munguia who had come in from the bullpen sealed the win with a big strikeout to advance the Royals in the winner's bracket for the first time in program history. It was also a program record 47th win of the year and the first time the Royals faced the Patriots.

The Royals will now have a few days to rest and will next take on the winner of number one seeded LSU Shreveport and tenth seeded Grand View on Monday, May 26 at 6:30 PM at Harris Field in Lewiston, ID.
