Seeley's Masterful Complete Game Leads Royals Past Owls in NAIA Tournament

Lewiston, ID - The No. 4 Hope International University baseball team (44-8) won their fifth game in a row as they took down the Oregon Institute of Technology Owls 3-2 in an incredible pitcher's duel on Monday evening in their first game of the NAIA Opening Round presented by Avista at Harris Field in Lewiston, ID.

Trey Seeley (12-1) picked up his 12th win in spectacular fashion throwing his second complete game of the season throwing 9 innings allowing two runs, one earned on four hits while walking two and striking out a season high 15 on 125 pitches. Kyle Harvey led the Royals offense going 2-for-4 with the game winning RBI.

The Royals would break the deadlock in the bottom of the first as Amari Bartee led off the game with a double would then score on an RBI groundout by Matthew Pinal to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. Seeley retired the first five Owls he faced in order but they eventually took advantage of an error to drive in a run in the top of the third to tie the game 1-1. The Royals would then take the lead back in the bottom of the third as Colby Moran came up clutch with a two out RBI single through the left side to put the Royals up 2-1.

Seeley would then put down the Owls in order in the top of the fourth and then work around a hit batter to retire them in the top of the fifth. The Owls would strike back on one of Seeley's few mistakes of the game to tie the game 2-2. Seeley wasn't rattled as he got two more strikeouts while holding the Owls at bay. The Royals then took the lead back in the bottom of the seventh as Harvey made up for an early error by smashing an RBI double to left center to put the Royals back up 3-2.

The Owls didn't go down without a fight as they got a one out single in the top of the eighth but Seeley induced an inning ending double play turned by Trotter Boston and Julian Francois to end the inning. Seeley then finished the game off by striking out the Owls in order in the top of the ninth to seal a 3-2 win.

The Royals will take on host and third seeded Lewis Clark State in the NAIA Opening Round semifinals on Tuesday, May 13 at 2:30 PM at Harris Field in Lewiston, ID.
