Landry Dominant Complete Game Leads Royals to NAIA Opening Round Championship Game

Lewiston, ID - The No. 4 Hope International University baseball team (45-8) ran their win streak to six games as they advanced to the Opening Round Championship game in the Lewiston bracket with a commanding 12-1 run rule victory over the host and third seeded Lewis-Clark State College Warriors on Tuesday afternoon at the NAIA Opening Round presented by Avista at Harris Field in Lewiston, ID.

Josh Landry (11-0) picked up his 11th win in dominant fashion throwing his second complete game of the season tossing 7 innings allowing just one run on three hits while walking three and striking out six. Matthew Pinal led the Royals offense going 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

The Royals struck first in the top of the first as Pinal delivered a two out RBI single to centerfield to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. Two batters later Branden Chun-Ming reached on a fielder's choice to drive in another run to make it 2-0. The Warriors looked for a response as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the second with two outs but Landry was up to the task inducing a flyout to get out of the inning. The Royals offense then added on in the top of the third as they started the inning with two singles before Julian Francois forced an error to make it 3-0. Chun-Ming then came through with  an RBI single through the right side to make it 4-0 before then attempting a steal that lead to another run as the Royals took a 5-0 lead. The Royals would then strike again in the top of the fourth as Mario Tostado unloaded a two run shot, his 10th of the year to increase the Royals advantage to 7-0.

Landry meanwhile continued to dominate on the mound as he retired the Warriors in order in the fourth and sixth innings. The Royals offense then struck again in the top of the sixth as back-to-back-to-back RBI singles from David Shackelford, Kyle Harvey and Matthew Pinal gave the Royals a commanding 10-0 lead. The Royals weren't done as Trotter Boston crushed his 11th home run of the year, a two run bomb down the right field line to make it 12-0. The Warriors would make it 12-1 in the bottom of the seventh but Landry bounced back striking out the Warriors best hitter to end the game via the ten run rule after seven innings.

The Royals will take on the winner of Wayland Baptist and Lewis-Clark State in the NAIA Opening Round Championship game on Wednesday, May 14 at 6:00 PM.
