Royals Nearly Perfect in Sweep of Buccaneers on Senior Day

Fullerton, CA – The No. 4 Hope International University baseball team (34-6, 18-2 GSAC) completed a four game sweep of the Park University Gilbert Buccaneers as they swept a doubleheader winning 8-4 and 8-3 on Saturday at home on senior day at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Jesus Munguia got the start and pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing three runs on three hits while walking three and striking out four. Gio Besio (1-0) picked up his first win in relief pitching 2 2/3 innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out seven of the 10 batters he faced. Julian Francois led the Royals offense going 1-for-2 with 3 RBIs.

The Royals jumped on top in the bottom of the first as Francois delivered a sac fly to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. Branden Chun-Ming then delivered a two out bouncing RBI single over the head of the third baseman to put the Royals up 2-0. Munguia then shut down the Buccaneers over the first four innings retiring them in order in the second and third innings to keep them off the board. The Royals then added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth as Josiah Chavez came through with a one out two run single to increase the Royals lead to 4-0. Francois then delivered his second sac fly of the game to put the Royals up 5-0.

The Buccaneers would strike back in the top of the fifth as they made it 5-3. Besio who had come in from the bullpen then got got a huge strikeout looking to limit the damage. The Royals then added another run in the bottom of the fifth as Trotter Boston doubled and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-3. Besio then retired the next six Buccaneers in a row including striking out the side in the sixth until they scored again in the top of the eighth to pull within 6-4. The Royals then added some insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth as Amari Bartee and Francois delivered back to back sac flies to increase the lead to 8-4. Sakemi Sato then pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the 8-4 win.

Game 2:
Matthew Pinal (2-1) picked up his second win with his best start of the season as was perfect through 4 innings facing the minimum 12 batters while striking out four. Mario Tostado led the Royals offense going 1-for-2 with 4 RBIs and a home run.

The Royals once again took an early lead in the bottom of the first as Amari Bartee launched his team leading 12th home run of the season to left field to put the Royals up 1-0. David Shackelford would then walk and score on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. The Royals then loaded the bases from Tostado who worked a walk to put the Royals up 3-0. Pinal meanwhile continued to cruise striking out the Buccaneers in order in the top of the third. The Royals then doubled their lead in the bottom of the third as Mario Tostado crushed a three run shot with two down to give the Royals a 6-0 lead.

The Royals pitching meanwhile continued to be perfect as Matthew Gonzalez pitched a flawless top of the fifth while striking out two. Colby Moran then added to the Royals lead as he blasted a two run shot just over the reach of the left fielder as the Royals increased their lead to 8-0. Chandler DeJong then pitched a flawless top of the sixth helped by a great catch from Chun-Ming along with two strikeouts to keep the perfect game intact. Unfortunately, the Royals pitching wasn't able to stay perfect as the Buccaneers scored three runs in the top of the seventh as the Royals won 8-3.

The Royals wrap up GSAC regular season action on the road as they travel to Mesa, AZ to open up a four game series with a doubleheader on Friday, April 11 beginning at 11:00 AM.
