Royals Capture Fifth GSAC Regular Season Championship

Mesa, AZ – The No. 4 Hope International University baseball team (36-6, 20-2 GSAC) clinched their fifth GSAC Regular Season Championship as they swept a GSAC doubleheader against Benedictine Mesa to open up a four game series winning 9-1 and 13-6 on Friday afternoon on the road at Mesa Community College in Mesa, AZ. This is the second time in program history the Royals have won back to back regular season titles.

Game 1:
Trey Seeley (10-0) picked up his 10th win throwing 6 innings allowing just one unearned run on seven hits while striking out four. Trotter Boston led the Royals offense going 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

The Royals jumped on top in the top of the first as Matthew Pinal got things started with a one out RBI single to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. Trotter Boston then crushed his 9th home run of the season, a three run bomb to push the Royals lead to 4-0. The Redhawks would answer with a two out rally in the bottom of the third to make it 4-1. Seeley then put the Redhawks down in order in the bottom of the fourth while the Royals added to their lead in the top of the fifth as Pinal crushed a leadoff home run to increase the Royals lead to 5-1.

The Redhawks tried to get to Seeley but he shut them down while the Royals offense added to their lead. Julian Francois would work a one out walk in the top of the sixth and would score on a passed ball to make it 6-1. David Shackelford then ripped an RBI double to center to increase the Royals lead to 7-1. Spencer Davis would then force an error in the top of the seventh to make it 8-1. Matthew Gonzalez then pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh while the Royals added another run in the top of the eighth on a bases loaded walk by Colby Moran to make it 9-1. Raul Herrada then pitched the final two innings for the Royals allowing no hits while striking out one to secure the win.

Game 2:
Josh Landry (8-0) picked up his eighth win pitching 5 shutout innings allowing just two hits while walking one and striking out eight. Kyle Harvey led the Royals offense going 4-for-5 with 4 RBIs.

The Royals once again jumped all over the Redhawks in the first inning as Pinal got the scoring started with a one out RBI double to right field to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. Harvey then ripped a two run single to center to increase the Royals lead to 3-0. Two batters later Josiah Chavez smacked his ninth home run of the year, a two run shot to push the Royals lead to 5-0. 

The Royals offense wasn't done as they struck for another big inning in the second. With the bases loaded an nobody out Shackelford delivered an RBI single to make it 6-0. Pinal then delivered a sac fly to increase the lead to 7-0. Harvey then came through with his second two run single of the game to break the game open 9-0. Then with two down Branden Chun-Ming delivered a clutch two out RBI single to put the Royals up 10-0.

Landry meanwhile shutdown the Redhawks offense while the Royals added to their lead in the top of the fifth as Mario Tostado launched his eighth home run of the season to make it 11-0. Manny Morales then added an RBI groundout in the top of the sixth to increase the Royals lead to 12-0. The Redhawks would finally get to the Royals bullpen in the bottom of the sixth as they struck from five runs to make it 12-5. Jaden Rez would then deliver a two out RBI double in the top of the seventh to increase the Royals lead back to 13-5. The Redhawks would get another in the bottom of the seventh but Logan Long finished off the game to secure the win and doubleheader sweep.

The Royals wrap up the GSAC regular season and their four game series against Benedictine Mesa with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 12 beginning at 11:00 AM. With the win the Royals will be the No. 1 seed for the GSAC Championships which will be held from April 28-30 at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, AZ.
