Bartee's Big Day Powers Royals to Sweep of Redhawks

Mesa, AZ – The No. 4 Hope International University baseball team (38-6, 22-2 GSAC) wrapped up GSAC regular season play by completing a four game sweep of the Benedictine Mesa University Redhawks as they swept a doubleheader winning 10-5 and 13-7 on Saturday afternoon on the road at Mesa High School in Mesa, AZ. 

Game 1:
Jesus Munguia (6-2) picked up his sixth win of the season pitching 5 2/3 innings allowing three runs, two earned on eight hits while walking one and striking out six. Amari Bartee led the Royals offense going 4-for-6 with 4 RBIs. 

The Royals struck again in the top of the first as Matthew Pinal delivered a clutch RBI double to left to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. The Royals then struck again with two outs in the top of the second as Bartee ripped a two run double to left to make it 3-0. The Redhawks looked for an answer but Munguia retired them in order in the second and third innings while the Royals continued to add to their lead with Moran driving in a run on a fielder's choice to put the Royals up 4-0. The Royals would add more runs in the top of the sixth as Bartee delivered a two out RBI single to make it 5-0. Julian Francois then came up clutch with a two run single as the Royals took a commanding 7-0 lead.

The Redhawks didn't give up as they rallied in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-3. Then with two on and two outs Mario Tostado came in from the bullpen to get a huge strikeout looking to end the inning. Tostado then shut down the Redhawks over the next two innings allowing no hits while striking out four. The Royals then added some insurance runs in the top of the ninth as Trotter Boston forced an error to make it 8-3. Two batters later Branden Chun-Ming delivered a sac fly to increase the lead to 9-3. Bartee then delivered an RBI single to give the Royals a 10-3 lead.

The Redhawks would rally in the bottom of the ninth to make it 10-5 but that's as close as they got as Logan Long who had come in from the bullpen got a groundout with a runner on first to end the game and seal the win. 

Game 2:
Matthew Pinal got the start and pitched 3 innings allowing three runs on five hits while striking out five. Chander DeJong (2-0) picked up the win in relief pitching one shutout inning while walking one and striking out one. Bartee led the Royals offense going 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs and a home run.

The game was scoreless until the top of the second when Colby Moran crushed his ninth home run of the season to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. The Royals then broke the game open with a huge top of the third. Bartee got things started by blasting his team leading 13th home run of the season, a two run shot to increase the Royals lead to 3-0. The Royals would then load the bases for Boston who delivered an RBI single to make it 4-0. Chun-Ming then unloaded a two run double to left field to increase the Royals advantage to 6-0. Two batters later Tostado delivered a sac fly to make it 7-0 before Bartee ripped his second hit of the inning to put the Royals ahead 8-0.

The Redhawks would strike back in the bottom of the third to make it 8-3 but Pinal limited the damage with two big strikeouts to end the inning. The Royals would then add to their lead in the top of the fourth as Chun-Ming delivered his third RBI of the game to make it 9-3. The Royals then struck again in the top of the fifth as Nathan Estrada and Josiah Chavez delivered back to back sac flys to increase the Royals lead to 11-3. The Redhawks didn't give up as they rallied over the next two innings to pull within 11-7 but Matthew Gonzalez came in to limit the damage getting a groundout and a flyout to end the inning.

The Royals would then add to their lead in the top of the seventh as Estrada delivered an RBI single up the middle to make it 12-7. Later in the inning Manny Morales reached on a fielder's choice and would score on a wild pitch to increase the Royals lead to 13-7. Chaz McWilliams then finished off the Redhawks in the bottom of the seventh as he struckout the side to end the game.

The Royals continue play at home as they take on Westcliff on Tuesday, April 15 at 6:00 PM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
