Royals Drop Final Home Game of the Season to Warriors

Fullerton, CA – The No. 4 Hope International University baseball team (38-7) couldn't hold on to an early lead as they fell for the first time all season at home and first time to the Westcliff University Warriors as they dropped a tight one 9-6 on Tuesday evening at home at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Gio Besio got the start and pitched two innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out three. Boom Ward (2-1) took the loss allowing the go ahead run to score. Trotter Boston led the Royals offense going 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs including a home run.

The game was scoreless until the top of the second as the Warriors struck for a run to take a 1-0 lead. The Royals quickly tied the game in the bottom of the first as Boston crushed his 10th home run of the season to leadoff the inning and tie it 1-1. Ryan Sveningson, Luke Wallin, Aaron Hernandez and Raul Herrada combined the shutdown the Warriors offense over four innings allowing just one hit while striking out four. 

The Royals would then take the lead in the bottom of the fifth as David Shackelford ripped a one out RBI double down the left field line to put the Royals up 2-1. Two batters later Boston delivered an RBI double to increase the lead to 3-1. After just missing one earlier Chun-Ming crushed a two run bomb, his fifth of the year to put the Royals ahead 5-1. The Royals were looking good until the top of the seventh as the Warriors took advantage of a pair of errors to tie the game 5-5.

The Royals looked to take the lead back but it was the Warriors who would keep scoring as they added two runs in the top of the eighth and two in the top of the ninth to take a 9-5 lead. The Royals looked to rally in the bottom of the ninth as they put two on with one down but they were only able to get one on an RBI groundout from Boston as they fell 9-6 for the first time all season at home.

The Royals wrap up regular season play on the road as they travel to Redlands, CA on Tuesday, April 22 to take on the University of Redlands at 3:00 PM.
