No. 8 Royals Complete First GSAC Series Sweep Against No. 9 Firestorm

Fullerton, CA – The No. 8 Hope International University baseball team (18-4, 4-0 GSAC) completed a four game sweep of their opening GSAC series against the No. 9 Arizona Christian University Firestorm as they won 6-4 and 8-1 to wrap up the NAIA Ball Big Series of the Week presented by Sho-Me League on Saturday at home at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Jesus Munguia (5-1) picked up his fifth win pitching 5 innings allowing two runs on six hits while walking four and striking out seven. Boom Ward secured his fourth save pitching one inning allowing one run while walking three and striking out one. David Shackelford led the offense going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Royals opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Shackelford crushed his second homerun of the season with one out to put the Royals up 1-0. The Firestorm would strike back in the top of the second as they took advantage of an error to tie the game 1-1. Munguia would limit the damage with a groundout and a big strikeout with two on and one out. The Firestorm would once again strikeout in the top of the fourth to make it 2-1 with nobody out. Once again Munguia stood strong as that's all he allowed picking up another strikeout in the process.

The Royals looked for an answer and got it in the bottom of the fourth as Shackelford led things off with his second hit of the game. The game was then delayed for about 15 minutes due to a rule controversy and when it resumed Matthew Pinal ripped an RBI triple down the right field line to tie the game 2-2. The Royals then loaded the bases for Branden Chun-Ming who delivered a sac fly to put the Royals back ahead 3-2. Julian Francois would then score on a wild pitch to make it 4-2. Later with two outs Ivan Barragan came through with a clutch RBI single up the middle to increase the Royals lead to 5-2.

The Firestorm would answer in the top of the sixth to make it 5-3 but that's all they would get as Sakemi Sato came in from the bullpen to get a huge strikeout to end the inning. Sato would pitch 1 2/3 innings allowing just one hit while walking one and striking out two. Chandler DeJong then got the Royals out of trouble in the top of the eighth to keep the two run lead intact. Chun-Ming would then single and score on an error in the bottom of the eighth to increase the Royals lead to 6-3. The Firestorm would have one last chance in the top of the ninth as they made it 6-4 but Ward struckout the go ahead run at the plate to secure the win.

Game 2:
Josh Landry (3-0) picked up his third win pitching 6 innings allowing one unearned run on three hits while walking one and striking out eight. Matthew Pinal and Julian Francois led the Royals offense with each going 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

The Firestorm took advantage of two errors and two controversial calls in the top of the first to take a 1-0. Landry didn't flinch though as a he induced a flyout with the bases loaded and two down to limit the damage. The Royals would quickly pick up their defense and pitcher in the bottom of the first as they sent their whole lineup to the plate against the Firestorm starter. The Royals would load the bases with nobody out for Colby Moran who delivered a two run single through the right side to put the Royals ahead 2-1. Two batters later Chun-Ming delivered an RBI single to make it 3-1. Later with two outs Francois launched a two run double to center to increase the Royals lead to 5-1.

That's all the run support Landry needed as he settled in from there scattering just two hits over the next five innings as he shut the Firestorm's offense down. The Royals offense then added to their lead as Shackelford launched his second home run of the day to leadoff the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-1. Pinal then delivered a two out two RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to give the Royals a commanding 8-1 lead. The Firestorm looked for one last chance in the top of the seventh but Ryan Sveningson came in from the bullpen pitching a scoreless inning allowing just one hit while walking one and striking out to seal the win and series sweep.

The Royals continue play at home as they host Bethesda on Wednesday, March 12 at 6:00 PM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
