Moran's Blast Leads Royals to Series Win Over Eagles

Prescott, AZ. – The No. 6 Hope International University baseball team (29-6, 14-2) came from behind to earn a doubleheader split and a series victory as they dropped the first game 11-8 and then won the second 16-15 on the road on Saturday afternoon in Prescott, AZ.

Game 1:
Jesus Munguia (5-2) got the start and took the loss pitching 4 innings allowing six runs, three earned on eight hits while walking one and striking out five. Colby Moran led the offense going 1-for-5 with 3 RBIs.

The Eagles jumped on top with runs in the second and third innings to take a 5-0 lead. The Royals finally got their offense going in the top of the fourth as Matthew Pinal launched a leadoff homerun to make it 5-1. Later in the inning Spencer Davis delivered a clutch two out RBI single to make it 5-2. The Eagles would answer in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 6-2 but once again the Royals clawed back with a run as David Shackelford singled and would score on a wild pitch to make it 6-3 in the top of the fifth. The Royals would then pull back another run in the top of the sixth to make it 6-4.

The Eagles weren't done scoring either as they tacked on five more runs over the next two innings to expand their lead to 11-4. The Royals didn't give up as they rallied in the top of the ninth. Trotter Boston came through with a clutch two out RBI double to make it 11-5. Two batters later Colby Moran smashed a three run bomb to center field to get the Royals within 11-8. That's as close as they got though as they dropped their first game ever against the Eagles.


Game 2:
Matthew Pinal got the start and pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing seven runs, two earned on five hits while walking two. Mario Tostado (2-0) picked up the win in relief pitching 1 2/3 shutout innings allowing no hits while striking out two. Boom Ward picked up his fifth save pitching the final inning allowing one run on two hits. Moran led the Royals offense going 3-for-4 with 5 RBIs.

The Royals jumped on top in the top of the first as Julian Francois crushed his sixth homerun of the year with one down to put the Royals up 1-0. Later in the inning Kyle Harvey and Brandon Chun-Ming delivered back to back RBI singles to increase the Royals lead to 3-0. The Eagles though took advantage of an error to score four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-3 lead. The Royals answered to tie it 4-4 on a sac fly by David Shackelford in the top of the second but once again the Eagles took advantage of an error to score five runs and take a 9-4 lead in the bottom of the second.

The Royals came flying back in the top of the third as they took advantage of an error to start the inning. Then with one down Josiah Chavez and Moran delivered back to back RBI singles to make it 9-6. The Royals would then load the bases for Julian Francois who came through with a sac fly to narrow the deficit to 9-7. Shackelford then ripped a game tying two run triple to right to make it 9-9. Pinal then followed with an RBI single to put the Royals back ahead 10-9. Willson Dunn then launched an RBI double to left to increase the Royals lead to 11-9. The Royals then took advantage of another error in the top of the fourth before Moran ripped an RBI triple to center to make it 12-9. Amari Bartee would then score on a stolen base and an error to give the Royals a 13-9 lead.
Once again an error cost the Royals in the bottom of the fourth as the Eagles rallied to tie the game 13-13. The Eagles took a 14-13 lead in bottom of the fifth inning. The Royals didn't give up as Dunn led off the top of the seventh with a double to get the Royals started. Later in the inning with two on and two outs down to their final strike Moran crushed a three run homerun his second of the day to put the Royals back ahead 16-15. The Eagles didn't go down easily as they got a homerun in the bottom of the seventh to make it 16-15 but Ward shut the door getting a groundout and a foulout to secure the save and the win.

The Royals continue action at home as they host Westcliff on Tuesday, April 1 at 6:00 PM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
