Chavez's Big Day, Ward's Save Leads Royals Over Warriors

Fullerton, CA – The No. 6 Hope International University baseball team (30-6) held off a late comeback attempt by the Westcliff University Warriors as they won 13-11 on Tuesday night at home at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Chaz McWilliams got the start and pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing two runs on two hits while walking three and striking out one. Mario Tostado (3-0) picked up his third win in relief pitching 2 1/3 innings allowing one run on one hit while striking out four. Boom Ward earned his sixth save pitching 1 1/3 innings allowing one unearned run while walking two and striking out one. Josiah Chavez led the Royals offense going 4-for-4 with 3 RBIs and two home runs.

McWilliams shut down the Warriors over the first two innings while the Royals offense came to life in the bottom of the second. Branden Chun-Ming ripped a one out RBI triple to left center to put the Royals ahead and would then score on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. The Royals then loaded the bases for Amari Bartee who delivered a sac fly to make it 3-0. The Royals would then take advantage of a dropped third strike to score another run before David Shackelford came through with an RBI single through the right side to give the Royals a 5-0 lead.

The Warriors would finally get on the board in the top of the third as they made it 5-2 but Tostado came in from the bullpen to get the final out and limit the damage. The Royals then added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth as Chavez crushed his seventh home run of the season to right to make it 6-2. Later in the inning Matthew Pinal delivered a two out RBI single to left before Trotter Boston crushed a three run bomb to right to give the Royals a 10-2 lead. The Warriors answered with a run in the top of the fifth to make it 10-3 but the Royals kept hitting in the bottom half as Chavez crushed his second home run of the game to give the Royals a 12-3 advantage. Julian Francois then delivered an RBI groundout to put the Royals up 13-3.

Things were looking good for the Royals as Tostado and then Aaron Hernandez continued to hold the Warriors at bay shutting them down in the top of the sixth. The Warriors would rally in the seventh to make it 13-7. Matthew Gonzalez then came in from the bullpen and only allowed one more run while working out of the jam to keep the Royals in front 13-8. The Warriors kept coming as they struck for two more in the top of the eighth to make it 13-10. Ward then came in for the four out save getting out of the eighth but ran into some trouble in the ninth as the Warriors made it 13-11. Ward then struckout the tying run at the plate to pick up the save and seal the win.

The Royals continue GSAC action at home as they open up a four game series against Park-Gilbert with a doubleheader on Friday, April 4 at 11:00 AM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
