No. 6 Royals Complete Four Game Sweep of Spirit

Fullerton, CA – The No. 6 Hope International University baseball team (26-5, 11-1) completed a four game sweep of the Ottawa University Arizona Spirit as they won 7-6 and 15-7 on Saturday afternoon at home at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Jesus Munguia got the start and pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing three runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out six. Chandler DeJong (1-0) picked up the win in relief pitching two innings allowing one hit and striking out two. Tyler Tilton picked up his first save getting the final two outs and striking out one. Julian Francois led the Royals offense going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. 

The Royals jumped on top in the bottom of the first as Matthew Pinal delivered an RBI single to put the Royals up 1-0. The Spirit would answer with two runs in the top of the second to go up 2-1 but Munguia would limit the damage with a huge strikeout to end the inning. The Spirit would then extend their lead to 3-1 in the top of the third. The Royals would strike back in the bottom half as Colby Moran ripped a one out two run double down the right field line to tie the game 3-3.

The Royals would then take the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Spencer Davis ripped a one out triple and would then come in to score the go ahead run on an RBI groundout by Nathan Estrada to make it 4-3. The Spirit didn't give up as they started the top of the seventh with a double. DeJong then came into the game but the Spirit were able to tie it 4-4. He bounced back to get a big strikeout to end the inning and then worked a scoreless top of the eighth to preserve the tie.

The Royals then took the lead back in the bottom of eighth with two outs as Josiah Chavez crushed his third homerun of the year to put the Royals back ahead 5-4. The Royals then got back to back singles before Francois ripped a two run double to put the Royals up 7-4 but he was thrown out at third to end the inning. The Spirit didn't go down easily as they made it 7-6 and loaded the bases with one out. Tilton then came in from the bullpen to get a popout and a huge strikeout to save the game in just his third appearance of the season.

Game 2:
Chaz McWilliams got the start and pitched one inning allowing three runs on two hits while walking one and striking out two. Logan Long (1-0) picked up his first win in relief pitching 3 innings allowing two runs on one hit while walking two and striking out one. Branden Chun-Ming led the Royals offense going 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs and a home run.

The Spirit jumped on top in the top of the first as they took a 3-0 lead. The Royals bounced back in the bottom of the first as Colby Moran ripped a one out two run double down the right field line to make it 3-2. The Spirit would then add to their lead in the top of the second as they took a 4-2 lead. The Royals then rallied in the bottom of the third as they got a walk and a single before Matthew Pinal ripped an RBI double to get the Royals within 4-3. Trotter Boston then forced an error to drive in two runs to give the Royals their first lead of the game 5-4. Chun-Ming then crushed a two run home right to left center, his fourth of the year to increase the Royals lead to 7-4. Later in the inning Nathan Estrada delivered a sac fly to make it 8-4.

Long put the Spirit down in order in the top of the fourth while the Royals extended their lead in the bottom half as Chun-Ming ripped a two out two run double to increase the Royals lead to 10-4. The Spirit didn't back down as they rallied to get within 10-7 in the top of the fifth. Ryan Sveningson then came in from the bullpen and loaded the bases with two outs before getting a huge strikeout to end the inning. The Royals then added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth as Spencer Davis would reach on a hit by pitch and then score on a sac fly by Francois to make it 11-7. Three straight singles would follow as Moran came through with a two out two run single to increase the Royals lead to 13-7. Boston would then drive in another run on an RBI single to push the Royals advantage to 14-7. The Royals offense wasn't done as Chavez launched his third homerun in three games as the Royals went on to win 15-7 to sweep the series.

The Royals continue GSAC play on the road as they travel to Prescott, AZ to open a four game series against Embry-Riddle (AZ) on Friday, March 28 at 11:00 AM.
