Seeley No-Hitter Leads Royals in Sweep of Spirit

Fullerton, CA – The No. 6 Hope International University baseball team (24-5, 9-1) swept their GSAC series opening doubleheader against the Ottawa University Arizona Spirit as they won 12-0 and 9-5 on Friday afternoon at home at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Trey Seeley (7-0) picked up his seventh win in dominating fashion throwing his first no hitter for the Royals pitching 9 innings while walking four and striking out nine on 115 pitches. David Shackelford led the Royals offense going 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs.

It was a pitcher's duel through the first three and half innings until the Royals broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Amari Bartee got the Royals first hit of the game as he ripped a double to left. Julian Francois would then follow with an RBI single through the right side to put the Royals up 1-0. Shackelford then ripped an RBI single to center to increase the Royals lead to 2-0. The Royals then broke open the game in the bottom of the fifth as they loaded the bases with nobody out. Then with two outs Shackelford delivered a clutch two run single to make it 4-0. Matthew Pinal then ripped a two run single to make it 6-0 before Trotter Boston came through with an RBI double to center to give the Royals a commanding 7-0 lead.

That's all the offense Seeley would need as he retired 12 straight Spirit batters before working  around a walk in the top of the seventh to retire two more and end the inning. The Royals then added more runs in the bottom of the eighth. With two on and one out Colby Moran forced an error to drive in two more runs to make it 9-0. Josiah Chavez then crushed his second homerun of the year to right field to increase the Royals lead to 11-0. Later in the inning Shackelford worked a bases loaded walk to make it 12-0. Seeley continued to deal in the top of the ninth as he worked around a one out walk to get a popout and a huge strikeout looking to seal his first Royals no hitter and the first 9 inning no hitter in program history with a 12-0 win.

Game 2:
Josh Landry (5-0) picked up his fifth win pitching 5 innings allowing just one run on four hits while walking two and striking out eight. Matthew Pinal led the Royals offense going 1-for-2 with 3 RBIs.

The Royals quickly opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Pinal crushed a two out two run home run, his fifth of the year to put the Royals up 2-0. The Spirit would get their first hit off the day off the Royals in the bottom of the second but Landry worked out of the jam getting a strikeout and flyout to end the inning. The Spirit would finally find an answer to the Royals pitching as they got a homerun in the top of the third to make it 2-1. That's all Landry would allow though as he shutdown the Spirit over five innings.

The Royals would add to their lead in the bottom of the fourth as Amari Bartee delivered a perfect bunt single that led to an error to drive in another run and make it 3-1. The Royals offense wasn't done as Shackelford launched his sixth home run of the year to lead off the bottom of the fifth and make it 4-1. Pinal would later walk and score on a passed ball before Moran delivered a sac fly to increase the Royals lead to 6-1. The Spirit would pull a run back in the top of the sixth to make it 6-2 but Gio Besio who had come in from the bullpen retired the next three hitters to end the inning.

The Royals then added some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. With one out Francois deliver an RBI double to right field to make it 7-2. Pinal then delivered an RBI groundout before Trotter Boston came through with a two out RBI single to put the Royals up 9-2. Besio looked to finish off the Spirit in the top of the seventh but they would load the bases with nobody out. Chandler DeJong then came into the game to wrap things up but the Spirit had other ideas as they got within 9-5 and were still threatening with one out. DeJong then got out of trouble inducing two popouts to end the game and seal the win.

The Royals wrap up their GSAC series against OUAZ with a doubleheader beginning on Saturday, March 22 at 11:00 AM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
