Royals Shutdown Lion Angels 12-2

Fullerton, CA – The No. 6 Hope International University baseball team (22-5) took down the Bethesda University Lion Angels 12-2 in a non conference matchup on Wednesday evening at home at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Chaz McWilliams got the start and pitched two innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out five. Mario Tostado (1-0) picked up the win in relief pitching two innings allowing one run on one hit while walking one and striking out two. Colby Moran led the Royals offense going 1-for-2 with 4 RBIs off of a grand slam.

McWilliams struck out the side to start the game while the Royals offense broke through in the bottom of the first. With one and two outs Matthew Pinal ripped an RBI double into the gap to put the Royals up 1-0. Trotter Boston then followed with a double to increase the Royals lead to 2-0. The Lion Angels would strike back in the top of the second to make it 2-1 but the Royals defense limited the damage throwing out the runner trying to advance. The Royals then reestablished a two run lead in the bottom of the second as Brandon Chun-Ming launched his fourth home run of the year to right center to make it 3-1.

The Lion Angels looked for an answer but it was the Royals who broke open the game in the bottom of the third. With two on and nobody out Boston delivered his second RBI double of the game to make it 4-1. Two batters later Moran crushed his second grand slam of the year to increase the Royals lead to 8-1. Later in the inning Julian Francois and David Shackelford delivered back to back RBI doubles to make it 10-1 with Shackelford scoring later on a wild pitch to make it 11-1.

The Lion Angels would get a run in the top of the fourth to make it 11-2 but that's all the Royals bullpen would allow as they shutout the Lion Angels over the final five innings with Matthew Gonzalez, Ryder Stowasser, Logan Long, Tyler Tilton and Chandler DeJong combining to allow no runs while striking out 10. The Royals would then add one more run in the bottom of the sixth as they went on to win 12-2.

The Royals continue GSAC play at home as they open up a four game series against OUAZ with a doubleheader on Friday, March 21 beginning at 11:00 AM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
