No. 8 Royals Hammer Mustangs 14-4 For GSAC Series Win

Fullerton, CA – The No. 8 Hope International University baseball team (21-5, 7-1 GSAC) wrapped up their four game series against the No. 25 Master's University Mustangs with a 14-4 win on Sunday on the road in Santa Clarita, CA.

Matthew Pinal (1-1) picked up his first win of the year as he pitched 4 shutout innings allowing just four hits while striking out three. David Shackelford led the offense going 4-for-4 with 3 RBIs including one home run.

Pinal put the Mustangs down in order in the bottom of the first while the Royals offense jumped on top in the top of the second. With two on and two out Josiah Chavez delivered a clutch two run double to put the Royals up 2-0. The Royals then added to their lead in the top of the third as Julian Francois clubbed his fourth home run of the season to give the Royals a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning Branden Chun-Ming came through with a one out RBI single to increase the Royals lead to 4-0.

The Mustangs looked for a response but Pinal continued to hold them at bay putting them down in order in the bottom of the third and then working out of trouble in the bottom of the fourth with a huge strikeout to end the inning. The Royals then broke open the game in the top of the fifth with a big inning. The Royals loaded the bases with nobody out for Mario Tostado who delivered an RBI single to center to make it 5-0. The Royals would then plate three more runs with a bases loaded walk to Bartee, an error and a fielder's choice by Ivan Barragan to give the Royals an 8-0 lead. Shackelford then smashed a three run bomb, his fifth of the year to give the Royals a commanding 11-0 lead.

The Mustangs would finally get to the Royals bullpen in the bottom of the fifth as they made it 11-3. Matthew Gonzalez would then come in from the bullpen to limit the damage and pitch 1 1/3 no hit innings while walking one and striking out one. The Royals offense wasn't done either as Alejandro Torres launched a pinch hit two out two run shot to increase the Royals lead to 13-3. Then in the top of the seventh Chun-Ming came through with another clutch hit to make it 14-3. The Mustangs didn't give up as they tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh making it 14-4 but that's all the Royals would allow as Logan Long came into the game to get the final out and secure the series win.

The Royals return home to face Bethesda on Wednesday, March 19 at 6:00 PM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
