Austin and Heidt Double Doubles Power Royals to Thrilling Win Over Spirit

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (11-11, 5-5 GSAC) won their fifth game in a row to put themselves back into the GSAC playoff hunt as they took down the Ottawa University Arizona Spirit 77-71 for their first home conference win this season in the Darling Pavilion.

The game was a high intensity thriller as the Royals took an early 7-3 lead on a layup by Amira Austin with 7:37 to go. The Spirit answered quickly as they rallied to tie the game before taking an 11-9 lead midway through the quarter. Mia Hedit quickly found Andrea Javier for a jumper to tie the game 11-11 but the Spirit kept scoring as they took a 15-11 lead with 1:47 left. Faith Brinkman then nailed a three followed by a three point play by Heidt to put the Royals back ahead 17-15 but the Spirit would finish the quarter with a three at the buzzer to take an 18-17 lead at the end of the first. The Spirit continued their momentum into the second half as they pushed their lead to 22-17 with 7:56 to go. The teams then exchanged baskets with the Spirit taking a 29-24 lead midway through the quarter. The Royals offense then exploded for a 13-0 run with five points each from Javier and Austin and another four from Heidt to retake a 37-29 lead with 1:47 remaining. The Spirit got their offense going late as the Royals led 39-34 at halftime.

The Royals got off to a good start in the the third with a huge block from Heidt and a layup from Jada Long expanding their lead to 43-34 just minutes into the action. This time the Spirit came storming back to retake a 44-43 lead with 6:33 to go. Austin answered to put the Royals back ahead but the Spirit would pull back out to a 55-51 advantage with 1:54 to go. The Royals then rallied to tie the game at the buzzer as Long passed it off to Heidt who laid it in off the backboard to make it 57-57 at the end of the third. The teams traded the lead to start the fourth before Faith Brinkman laid it in to spark a 10-2 run as the Royals took a 71-63 lead midway through the quarter. The Spirit answered but back to back baskets by Aliyah Gonzalez and Mia Heidt gave the Royals their largest lead at 75-65 with 2:21 to go. The Spirit didn't give up as they used the full court press to create turnovers and close within 75-71 with 1:26 to go. The Royals defense stood strong after a timeout and Javier iced the game with two free throws as the Royals won 77-71 in a thriller to move into a three way tie for third in the GSAC standings. Heidt (15 points, 13 rebounds) and Austin (18 points, 12 rebounds) led the Royals with a pair of double doubles.

The Royals continue GSAC action at home as they host No. 13 Arizona Christian on Saturday, February 8 at home in the Darling Pavilion.
