Bartee Blast Powers No. 2 Royals to Thrilling Comeback Victory

Fullerton, CA – The No. 2 Hope International University baseball team (11-4) bounced back with a thrilling come from behind 15-10 victory over the La Sierra University Golden Eagles on Tuesday evening at home at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Gio Besio got the start and pitched two innings allowing two runs, none earned while walking two and striking out three. Boom Ward (2-0) picked up his second win in relief pitching the final two innings while allowing just two hits and striking out four. Amari Bartee and Julian Francois led the Royals offense with 3 RBIs each.

The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the first as they took an early 2-0 lead but Besio got a huge strikeout to end the inning and limit the damage. The Royals struck back in the second as they took advantage of two errors to load the bases and would scrape across two runs on a wild pitch strikeout and a balk to tie the game 2-2. The Golden Eagles would answer immediately in the top of the third as they took a 5-2 lead and would have had the potential to score more if not for a great play from right fielder David Shackelford to catch the runner trying to advance to third and end the inning.

The Royals then returned the favor in the bottom of the third striking for a big inning. After a single and walk Branden Chun-Ming came through with an RBI single to center to make it 5-3. Willson Dunn then forced an error to drive in another run to make it 5-4 before Josiah Chavez ripped a go ahead RBI double into the gap to put the Royals ahead for the first time 6-5. Francois then followed with an RBI single to make it 7-5. The Royals weren't done as later with two outs Colby Moran delivered a two run single to increase the Royals lead to 9-5.

Things were looking good for the Royals as Ryan Sveningson pitched a 1-2-3 top of the fourth inning while striking out two and then Sakemi Sato followed with a scoreless top of the fifth after getting a double play and a strikeout to hold the Golden Eagle at bay. The Golden Eagles weren't to be held for long though as they struck for two more runs in the top of the sixth and three in the top of the seventh to take a 10-9 lead. Chandler De Jong who had come in in relief then got a big strikeout to end the inning.

The Royals didn't give up and with one on and one out in the bottom of the seventh defending GSAC Player of the Week Bartee crushed his team leading sixth home run of the season over the left center field wall to put the Royals back ahead 11-10. Boom Ward then pitched a shutdown eighth inning before the Royals offense added some insurance in the bottom half. The Royals would load the bases with one down for Francois who would rip a two run single off the second base bag to extend the Royals lead to 13-10. Bartee then came back up to the plate and delivered again with an RBI single to make it 14-10. Shackelford then followed with an RBI single as the Royals went on to win 15-10.

The Royals continue action at home as they host Providence Christian for a three game series beginning on Friday, February 28 at 2:00 PM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
