Royals Win Streak Ends With Split Against Red Hawks

Redding, CA – The No. 2 Hope International University baseball team (10-4) wrapped up their Northern California road trip with a doubleheader split against the Simpson University Red Hawks as they won the first game 16-2 before blowing an early lead and falling 12-7 in a pair of seven inning games on Saturday afternoon in Redding, CA.

Game 1:
Jesus Munguia (3-1) picked up the win pitching 5 shutout innings allowing just six hits while striking out two. Willson Dunn led the Royals offense going 1-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBIs

The Royals broke through in the top of the first as Colby Moran worked a bases loaded walk to put the Royals up 1-0. The Red Hawks looked to answer in the bottom of the first as they loaded the bases with one out but Munguia induced a groundout double play to end the inning. The Royals then added to their lead in the top of the second as Amari Bartee crushed a two run bomb to left field to make it 3-0. Matthew Pinal then followed by smashing a home run to right field to put the Royals up 4-0. Later in the inning Branden Chun-Ming ripped a two run double followed by a two run single from Spencer Davis as the Royals broke open the game for an 8-0 lead. The Royals continued to pad their lead in the top of the third as Josiah Chavez came through with a one out RBI double to make it 9-0 before Colby Moran drove in another run on an error to give the Royals a 10-0 lead.

Munguia continued to shutdown the Red Hawks offense working out of a bases loaded jam
In the fourth and then putting them down in order in the top of the fifth. The Royals would then turn to their bullpen and the Red Hawks took advantage as they made it 10-2 in the bottom of the sixth. Mario Tostado who had come in in relief then rebounded to retire the next three Red Hawks to end the inning. The Royals offense then put up a big number in the top of the seventh. Julian Francois ripped a one out two run double to left center to make it 12-2 before coming around to score on an RBI single from Jaden Rez as the Royals went up 13-2. Dunn then launched his first career Royals home run, a three run shot to give the Royals a commanding 16-2 lead. Logan Long then worked out of trouble in the bottom of the seventh getting a groundout with the bases loaded to seal the win.

Game 2:
Matthew Pinal (1-0) got the start and took the loss pitching 2 1/3 innings allowing eight runs, four earned on four hits while walking three. Dunn led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and a home run.

The Red Hawks got on the board first with a home run in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. The Royals quickly responded in the top of the second as Dunn launched his second home run of the day to put the Royals ahead 2-1. The Royals added another run in the top of the third on a sac fly by Dunn to increase their lead to 3-1. The Red Hawks would strike back in the bottom of the third as they took advantage of two slow ground balls that the Royals were unable to field as they struck for eight runs to take a 9-3 lead.

The Royals looked for a response in the top of the fourth as Nathan Estrada and Bartee smashed back to back solo home runs to make it 9-5. The Red Hawks would answer right back scoring two more runs without recording a hit as they extended their lead to 11-5. The Royals looked to rally in the top of the fifth with back to back singles to start the inning but were unable to cash in. The Royals didn't give up as Trotter Boston launched a two run bomb in the top of the sixth to make it 12-7 but that's as close as the Royals got as they were unable to continue their rally as they fell 12-7 to end a nine game winning streak.
