Seeley and Ward Lead Royals to Sweep of Red Hawks

Redding, CA – The No. 2 Hope International University baseball team (9-3) extended their winning streak to eight games as they swept a doubleheader over the Simpson University Red Hawks winning 9-6 and 4-2 on Friday to open up a four game series on Friday afternoon on the road in Redding, CA.

Game 1:
Trey Seeley (3-0) picked up the win pitching 6 innings allowing just one run on three hits while walking two and striking out 12. Gio Besio picked up his first save pitching 2 1/3 no hit innings while striking out two. Kyle Harvey led the Royals offense going 1-for-4 with a grand slam.

The Royals struck first as they started out a two out rally with a pair of walks before Trotter Boston came through with an RBI single to put the Royals ahead 1-0 in the top of the first. Seeley ran into trouble in the top of the first as the Red Hawks pushed across a run to tie it 1-1 and had the bases loaded with nobody out. Seeley responded by striking out the next batter and inducing a double play to limit the damage.

The Royals offense then struck back in the top of the second as they put two runners on from Amari Bartee who launched his team leading third home run of the season to put the Royals ahead 4-1. The Royals then added another run in the top of the third as Trotter Bostom smashed his second Royals home run to extend the lead to 5-1. The Royals then broke the game open in the top of the fourth as the Royals loaded the bases with nobody out for Harvey who crushed his first home run as a Royals, a grand slam to give the Royals a commanding 9-1 lead.

The Red Hawks looked for an answer as Seeley continued to deal retiring them in order in the bottom of the sixth to keep them off the board. The Royals then turned to their bullpen in the bottom of the seventh but that led to a Red Hawks comeback as they scored five runs to make it 9-6. Besio then came in to end the threat with a huge strikeout and proceeded to retire the Red Hawks in order in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings to pick up the save and secure the 9-6 win.

Game 2:
Josh Landry got the start and pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing two runs on four hits while walking six and striking out three. Boom Ward (1-0) picked up the win in relief pitching 2 1/3 innings allowing just one hit while walking one. Amari Bartee led the Royals offense going 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

It was a pitcher's duel throughout as the game was scoreless through the first two innings. The Royals would get their first hit to lead off the top of the third with a booming double by Colby Moran but were unable to cash in as the game remained scoreless. Landry ran into trouble in the bottom of the third as the Red Hawks took the lead but he bounced back with a big strikeout with the bases loaded to limit the damage as the Royals trailed 1-0.

The Red Hawks continued to shutdown the Royals offense until Moran launched his second Royals home run to tie the game 1-1 with one out in the top of the fifth. The Royals then took the lead with runners on the corners as Bartee delivered a perfect sac bunt to put them up 2-1. That lead didn't last long though as the Red Hawks tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Ward then came in in relief with the bases loaded and two down inducing an RBI groundout to limit the damage.
The Royals then looked for the go ahead run in the top of the seventh as Spencer Davis started a two out rally started with a double. Bartee then ripped an RBI double to put the Royals back ahead 3-2. The Royals then loaded the bases and drove in another run on a Willson Dunn hit by pitch to make it 4-2. Ward then shutdown the Red Hawks working around a two out walk to retire the side and seal the win.
