Royals Stun Mustangs 60-48 Behind Heidt Double Double

Santa Clarita, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (14-12, 8-6 GSAC) finished off the GSAC regular season with a 60-48 win over The Master's University Mustangs on Thursday evening on the road in Santa Clarita, CA.

The first quarter was a defensive battle as the teams exchanged baskets with the Royals taking a 4-2 lead before the Mustangs rallied to go up 8-4. Mia Heidt then hit a jumper to make it 8-6 before the teams traded baskets again with Andrea Javier putting the Royals within 10-8 at the end of the first. The Mustangs continued to hold the lead in the second at 13-10 before the Royals came to life with a 10-2 run sparked by another layup from Javier to take a 20-15 lead with 5:25 to go. The Mustangs would rally to tie it 22-22 but Aliyah Gonzalez answered with a layup to put the Royals back ahead 24-22. The Mustangs would keep it close at 26-24 before Gonzalez found Faith Brinkman to nail a three as the Royals closed out the quarter on an 8-2 run finished off by a three point play by Gonzalez to take a 34-26 halftime lead.

The Royals offense continued to fire on all cylinders to start the third quarter as the teams exchanged baskets before an 8-1 run led by four points from Gonzalez stretched the Royals lead to 48-31 midway through the quarter. The Mustangs didn't give up as they rallied to get within 48-39 before a layup from Calla Anderson broke a dry spell as the Royals went on to lead 52-41 at the end of the third. The Mustangs looked for a response in the fourth but the Royals defense came up big while Mia Heidt scored six points to give the Royals a 58-47 lead midway through the fourth. The Royals defense continued to shutdown the Mustangs while a basket from Brinkman sealed a 60-48 win. Heidt led the Royals with a double double (20 points, 16 rebounds) as they finished the conference season going 8-1 over their final nine games after starting 0-5.

With the win the Royals earned the No. 4 seed in the GSAC Tournament and will travel to Glendale, AZ to take on No. 1 Arizona Christian on Friday, February 28 at 4:00 PM.
