Pitching and Defense Leads Royals in Sweep of Warriors

Fullerton, CA – The No. 2 Hope International University baseball team (7-3) extended their winning streak to six games as they swept a doubleheader over the Westcliff University Warriors winning 5-3 and 5-4 in a pair of tight games on Saturday at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Trey Seeley (2-0) picked up the win pitching 8 sold innings allowing just two runs, one earned on three hits while walking one and striking out 9. Sakemi Sato picked up his first save pitching one inning while allowing one run on one hit. Trotter Boston led the Royals offense going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Seeley retired the Warriors in order including back to back strikeouts in the top of the first while the Royals offense took the lead in the bottom half. With runners on the corners and one down Kyle Harvey delivered an RBI groundout to put the Royals up 1-0. Boston then followed with an RBI single to left to increase the Royals lead to 2-0. Seeley continued to deal allowing just a walk through the first four innings while the Royals added to their lead in the bottom of the third with a fielder's choice from David Shackelford to make it 3-0. Then in the fourth Colby Moran launched a two out RBI double to the deepest part of the park in centerfield to make it 4-0.

The Warriors would finally answer in the top of the sixth to make it 4-1 after a leadoff double came around to score on a groundout. The Royals then added to their lead as Matthew Pinal in his first game back from injury launched a solo run down the right field line to make it 5-1. The Warriors then took advantage of an error in the top of the eighth to make it 5-2 but Seeley came right back to get a huge strikeout and limit the damage. The Warriors kept battling as a home run in the top of the ninth with one out made it 5-3 but Sato who had come in for the save bounced back by inducing a groundout and flyout to end the game and seal a 5-3 win.

Game 2:
Josh Landry got the start and pitched 4 innings allowing three runs on one hit while walking five and striking out 8. Jesus Munguia (2-1) picked up the win in relief pitching two innings allowing just one hit while walking one and striking out three. Boom Ward picked up his first save pitching 1/3 of an inning allowing just one hit. Harvey and Boston led the Royals offense with 2 RBIs each.

Landry would work around a walk in the top of the first to retire the Warriors and keep the game scoreless but then he would run into trouble in the top of the second. The Warriors would take a 2-0 lead after taking advantage of a couple of walks but Landry bounced back getting a big strikeout with the bases loaded to limit the damage. The Royals would answer in the bottom of the third as Mario Tostado launched his team leading third home run of the season for the Royals first hit as they made it 2-1. Later in the inning with two down Harvey launched a two run triple to deep centerfield to put the Royals ahead 3-2.

Landry then retired the Warriors in order in the top of the fourth but he would then run into trouble in the fifth as he exited the game after another walk. The Warriors would then tie it 3-3 with two outs in the inning. The tie didn't last long as the Royals struck back in the bottom of the fifth. Shackelford got a two out rally started with a single and would later score as Boston ripped a two run double down the left field line to put the Royals ahead 5-3. Munguia then worked out of trouble in the top of the sixth before Gio Besio came in to pitch two scoreless innings allowing just one hit while striking out three. Chandler De Jong then looked to close out the game in the ninth getting two quick outs but a inconsistent strike zone from the umpire led to the bases being loaded to chase him from the game. Ward then came into the game and gave up a soft infield hit that allowed the Warriors to make it 5-4. Schackelford then made an amazing diving catch in right field to rob the Warriors of a go ahead hit and secure the 5-4 win.

The Royals continue action on the road as they head to Northern California for a four game series against the Simpson University Red Hawks beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, February 21 at 11:00 AM.
