Royals Rally to Defeat Warriors 63-54 on Senior Night

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (12-12, 6-6 GSAC) got back on the winning track as they rallied from a first half deficit to defeat the Life Pacific University Warriors 63-54 on Wednesday evening in the Darling Pavilion. The Royals seniors were honored before the start of the game.

The Royals got off to a quick start as they jumped out to a 6-2 advantage with back to back baskets from Mia Heidt to take the early lead. The Warriors would battle back to tie it 6-6 before the teams then traded baskets with Heidt putting the Royals up 11-9 with 5:50 to go. The Warriors would quickly retake the lead 16-11 but the Royals tried to slow their momentum with a big three from Jada Long to draw within 16-14 with 3:11 remaining. The Warriors kept their offense going while the Royals struggled from three and trailed 22-15 at the end of the first. The Royals tried to get back the momentum to start the second with a bucket from Aliyah Gonzalez but the Warriors answered with one of their own. The Royals kept trying as Andrea Javier hit a jumper to make it 26-23 with 4:15 left. The Royals shooting woes continued though as the Warriors went on to lead 32-25 at the half.

The Warriors upped their lead to 34-24 to start the third but the Royals came right back with Amira Austin sparking a 9-2 run with six points to bring the Royals within 36-34 at 5:31 to go. The Warriors answered with a bucket but the Royals kept coming as an Aliyah Gonzalez free throw put them back up 39-38 for the first time since the first quarter. The teams then traded points with the Warriors taking a 42-41 lead at the end of the third. The Royals quickly took the lead back to start the fourth as Long found Faith Brinkman for a three to put the Royals ahead 46-42. The Warriors would answer to tie it 46-46. The Royals then came to life with Javier hitting back to back shots to jumpstart an 11-0 run as the Royals took a commanding 57-46 lead with :52 seconds left. The Warriors were finally able to hit some late threes but the Royals defense held firm and the offense hit their free throws down the stretch as the Royals won 63-54. Austin led the Royals with 14 points while Heidt put up another double double (13 points, 12 rebounds).

The Royals continue GSAC action on the road as they travel to Northern Arizona to take on Embry-Riddle (AZ) on Saturday, February 15 at 12:00 PM in Prescott, AZ.
