Royals Rally to Defeat Redhawks in OT for Fourth Win in a Row

Mesa, AZ - The Hope International University women's basketball team (10-11, 3-5 GSAC) won their fourth game in a row as they rallied to defeat the Benedictine University Mesa Redhawks 75-64 in an overtime thriller on Saturday afternoon on the road in Mesa, AZ.

The Royals got off to a hot start as they opened on a 7-0 run led by five points from Mia Heidt to take the early lead. The Redhawks rallied to make it 7-5 but Aliyah Gonzalez answered with a big three as the Royals extended their lead back to 12-5 with 3:28 to go. The Redhawks once again rallied as they tied the game 16-16 at halftime. The Redhawks took the lead to start the second but the Royals answered on a 5-0 run with back to back baskets from Amira Austin as the Royals extended their lead to 24-18 with 5:51 to go. The Redhawks rallied to make it 24-22 but Mia Heidt quickly answered with a layup to make it 26-22. The teams then traded baskets until Heidt scored again right before halftime to put the Royals up 31-26 at halftime. 

The Redhawks would comeback to start the third as they opened on a 9-2 run to take a 35-33 lead with 4:41 to go. Gonzalez quickly tied the game up 35-35 but the Redhawks extended their lead to 39-35 with 3:16 left. The Royals were able to get back within a point several times but were unable to tie it as the Redhawks led 44-41 at the end of the third. The Royals got within one to start the quarter but the Redhawks would pull out to a 55-49 advantage with 3:18 to go. The Royals didn't go down easily as a jumper by Andrea Javier started a 5-0 run as the Royals made it 55-54 with :45 seconds to go. The Redhawks would make it 57-54 before Javier found Faith Brinkman in the corner for a big three to tie it 57-57. The Redhawks would answer to go up 59-57 with :07 seconds left but the Royals weren't done as Austin drove to the basket with :01 second left to tie it 59-59 and send the game to overtime.

The Royals quickly retook the lead to start overtime on a layup by Heidt. The Redhawks tried to keep pace as they made it 62-61 but the Royals extended their lead to 69-63 with a big three by Natalie Acuna with 1:26 to go. The Redhawks made it 69-64 but the Royals defense held strong while the offense knocked down crucial free throws as the Royals pulled away for a 75-64 win. Heidt led the Royals with another double double (18 points, 10 rebounds).

The Royals continue GSAC action at home as they host OUAZ on Thursday, February 6 at 5:30 PM in Mesa, AZ.
