FULLERTON – Hope International endured a rough fourth quarter in Saturday's nonconference women's basketball showdown with College of Idaho, getting outscored 20-9 in a 62-52 setback at the Darling Pavilion.
College of Idaho shot 53.3 (16 of 30) percent in the second half, including 9 of 17 in the fourth period to pull away from the Royals. HIU managed to make just two field goals in the final quarter, finishing 2 of 12 (16.7%) overall.
As a result, the Yotes turned a 43-42 deficit at the end of three quarters into a 10-point win, improving to 2-2 on the season. The Royals dropped to 2-2.
Kylie Waltermayer scored seven of her game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter for College of Idaho.
Lainee Houillon gave the Yotes a 44-43 lead – one they would not relinquish – with the first bucket of the fourth period.
HIU did not score its first points in the fourth until Nicole Chuang's three-pointer with 5:36 to go, bringing the Royals within 49-46. Two free throws from Aliyah Gonzalez with 4:18 on the clock kept HIU hovering within striking distance, trailing just 53-50.
But the Yotes engineered a 9-0 run to increase their lead to 62-50. During the run, Anna Mooney hit a three, followed by buckets from Riley Beck, Brooke Beresford and Waltermeyer.
Jada Long scored HIU's final points on a jumper with 55 seconds remaining.
The first three quarters were contested on equal footing. HIU trailed 11-5 early, but scored six of the final seven points to trail just 12-11 after one quarter.
HIU built a four-point lead at 28-24 as Long scored five straight in the second period. Houillon's layup cut the Yote deficit to 28-26 at halftime.
Eight lead changes took place in the third quarter as both teams traded basket after basket. Javier hit a jumper with eight seconds remaining to give the Royals a 43-42 lead.
Javier and Amira Austin tied for team-high honors with 14 points apiece. Javier also recorded five steals, while Austin tallied three blocked shots and three steals.
HIU forced College of Idaho to commit 23 turnovers, but scored just five points off those miscues.
The Royals struggled from the three-point line, finishing at 19.0 (4 of 21) percent for the game.
HIU gets a week off before returning to action for the first GSAC game, facing La Sierra on the road on Saturday, November 22. Tip time is 6:00 p.m.
