Women’s Basketball Romps to Victory in GSAC Opener

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Hope International women's basketball enjoyed a 72-41 victory over La Sierra on Saturday in the Great Southwest Athletic Conference opener for both squads.

The Royals opened up a 41-16 halftime lead and widened the margin to 35 points through three quarters.

Jada Long scored a game-high 13 points off the bench for the Royals. She made 5 of 7 floor shots, including 3 of 4 from distance.

Angelina DeLeon added 12 points and tallied five of HIU's 15 steals. The third double figure scorer was senior Amira Austin, who knocked down 5 of 11 shots for 10 points. She also had two blocked shots and three steals.

Playing a productive 13 reserve minutes, Jamelia Coleman chipped in nine points and a game-high tying nine rebounds. She hit a pair of three-pointers as well.

HIU (3-2, 1-0 GSAC) shot 42.9 (27 of 63) percent from the field, and held the Golden Eagles to just 25.0 (12 of 48) percent efficiency. HIU harassed La Sierra (1-3, 0-1 GSAC) into 24 turnovers, producing a 32-12 edge in points off turnovers.

La Sierra's starters shot a combined 1 of 15 from the field. The Golden Eagles were led by Amaya Sanchez with 12 points.

HIU trailed for the only time in the game at 2-0 on a layup by Yasmine Garrett. Once DeLeon's layup gave the Royals a 4-2 lead, the defense kicked in and held La Sierra without a point for the next four minutes. HIU scored 12 straight points to take a 10-point lead.

Long extended the lead to 17-4 on a three-pointer, and Aliyah Gonzalez made a layup to give HIU a 21-9 advantage at the end of one quarter.

Another Long triple at the 8:12 mark of the second quarter produced HIU's biggest lead at 16 points, 26-10. DeLeon converted a three-point play to add to the 8-1 run to open the period. Coleman's triple created the first 20-point lead of the game at 34-13, and HIU outscored the home team 20-7 in the second for a 41-16 lead at intermission.

Gonzalez notched six points in the third quarter as HIU held La Sierra to 2 of 9 shooting.

The Royals return to action on Monday, hosting Southern Oregon for a 5:30 p.m. game.
