PHOENIX, Ariz. – Reid Lizardo led a contingent of Hope International players at the ITA men's tennis NAIA Fall Championship last weekend, recording three victories and advancing all the way to the semifinals.
The third-seeded Lizardo received a first round bye. In his first match in the round of 32, Lizardo defeated Arizona Christian's Diego Mejia by a 6-3, 6-3 score.
His next three opponents were all ranked in the bracket. Lizardo toppled No. 14 seed Filip Novacek of OUAZ in quick 6-1, 6-2 fashion. Facing adversity in the quarterfinals, Lizardo overcame a first set loss to prevail 1-6, 6-3, 10-3 over No. 6 seed Razvan Lazar of OUAZ.
Lizardo's run in the tournament ended in the semifinals, where he fell 6-7 (4), 7-5, 10-2 to 10th-seeded Sam Miyata of Arizona Christian.
Two more Royals reached the round of 16. No. 12 seed Felix Hamp recorded a 6-1, 6-2 triumph against ACU's Jose Uzcategui before falling to No. 5 seed Petar Wemmenhove of ACU, 6-2, 6-3.
Tommy Folsom, the tournament's No. 16 seed, dispatched ACU's Summit Newell by a 6-3, 6-2 score in the round of 32. He then faced No. 1 seed Hugo Abril of ACU, and fell 6-0, 6-1 in the round of 16.
James Nicols, Kento Henderson, Michael Lumang, Kaito Henderson, David Gutierrez and Sebastien Perez collected wins in the round of 64 before losing their next matches.
On the doubles side, Hamp and Lizardo earned the No. 4 seed and won twice to eventually reach the semifinals. In the round of 16, the HIU duo knocked off ACU's Uzcategui and Fenosoa Rajendra, 8-2. The Royal tandem then won their next match by walkover before tangling with top-seeded Lemahieu and Abril of ACU. The ACU team won 8-4 in the semifinal matchup.
