SURPRISE, Ariz. – Hope International sandwiched goals from Christian Hernandez and Vincent Lopez around two OUAZ scores, posting a 2-2 tie in GSAC men's soccer action on Saturday from Spirit Field.
It was a program record sixth tie for HIU, which left the Grand Canyon state with a 3-4-6 record, including 2-3-3 in the GSAC. The Spirit moved to 3-6-2 overall and 2-4-2 in the conference.
Hernandez secured his first goal of the season in the fourth minute, knocking in a ball served up by Roberto Estrada. The Royals maintained the 1-0 edge until the 35:23 mark when the Spirit drew a foul inside the box.
Jesus Torres stepped up to the spot and buried his shot to tie the score at 1-1.
OUAZ grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute with Carlos Rodriguez providing the go-ahead goal. Torres and Nico Linares received double assists on the play.
HIU, which peppered OUAZ goalie Hayden Millard with shots all afternoon, held a 23-9 shots advantage overall and 14-4 in the second half.
The Royals earned a foul inside the box in the 57th minute to set up their own penalty kick opportunity. Vincent Lopez took the honors and beat Millard, who made 13 saves for the Spirit, for the game-tying goal.
HIU goalie Berlin Torres stopped three shots. Lopez and Matthias Alcaraz topped the Royals with five shots apiece.
HIU polishes off a three-match roadtrip on Thursday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m. against La Sierra.
