Men’s Soccer Falls to La Sierra

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Hope International and La Sierra put goals on display in a men's soccer clash on Wednesday, but it was the Golden Eagles which prevailed by a 5-3 score.

The Golden Eagles (8-3-1, 6-3-0 GSAC) broke open a 2-2 tie with three straight second half goals.

The game featured 37 fouls and 18 cards, including red cards to HIU's Cesar Naranjo and La Siierra's Sean Palena.

Naranjo helped HIU (3-5-6, 2-4-3 GSAC) to a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the match as he hit a cross toward the mouth of the goal. Diego Albanez knocked the ball off a La Sierra defender and into the net. The own goal gave the Royals a 1-0 lead.

Carlos Leon equalized for the Golden Eagles in the 40th minute, and the two teams went into intermission tied at 1-1.

Vinicius Goncalves, who posted a hat trick for La Sierra, scored the first of three in the 54th minute, on an assist from Palena. But HIU responded just 28 seconds later.

The Royals drew a foul in the box and Albanez earned a penalty kick opportunity. His shot was saved by a diving La Sierra goalie, but the deflection went straight to Christopher Ferrufino, who steered his header into the right corner of the net.

But Goncalves scored back-to-back goals six minutes apart to regain the lead for the home side, and Alexander Munoz increased the lead to 5-2 at the 81:30 mark.

HIU pulled one back with a minute and half to play as Anthony Youssef notched his first goal.

The shots were nearly even, with HIU holding a slight 11-10 advantage. HIU also held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Berlin Torres made three saves and played the first 67 minutes before being lifted for Wyatt Schaap in the second half.

La Sierra's Abraham Perez made four saves.

The Royals return to action on Thursday, October 23 against Soka. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the OC Great Park.
