Royals Fall to Mustangs in Overtime Thriller

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (6-7, 0-1 GSAC) dropped their GSAC opener as they fell 72-68 to the Master's University Mustangs in a heartbreaking overtime thriller on Saturday afternoon at home in the Darling Pavilion.

The Mustangs came out strong as they opened the game on a 10-3 run. The Royals quickly battled back on a 9-2 run led by four points from Amira Austin to tie the game 12-12 with 5:29 remaining. The Mustangs would answer to go back up 16-12 but the Royals answered on a 6-0 run with back to back layups from Trasara Alexander to take their first lead of the game at 18-16. The Mustangs would then get the final basket of the quarter as the game was all tied up at the end of the first. The Royals quickly took the lead back as back to back layups from Austin put them up 22-18. It was a back and forth game from there as the teams exchanged leads with the Mustangs going up 29-27 with 4:34 to go. The Royals weren't down for long as an Andrea Javier layup sparked a 10-0 run with big threes from Alexander and Faith Brinkman to put the Royals up 37-29 at halftime.

It was a slow start to the third as neither team could score until the Mustangs rallied to retake a 38-37 lead with 4:18 to go. The Royals then found some offense as a Javier layup gave the Royals a 39-38 lead. The teams then traded baskets with the Mustangs going back ahead 43-41 with 1:52 to go. The Royals would then tie it on a McNamee layup 43-43 at the end of the quarter. The Mustangs continued to score in the fourth as they opened on a 9-2 run to take a 52-45 lead with 5:32 to go. The Royals didn't give up as they answered on a 9-0 run finished off by a Mia Heidt layup to take a 54-52 lead with :18 seconds to go. It looked like Heidt was fouled on the play but the Royals didn't get the call while the Mustangs went back down the court and tie it 54-54 to send the game to overtime.

Both teams offensives came to life in overtime as the Mustangs quickly took the lead 57-54 but the Royals would answer right back on a Jada Long layup to make it 57-56. The Mustangs would go on to lead 66-59 but the Royals kept fighting as Brinkam nailed a three from Steph Curry range to make it 66-62. That's as close as the Royals would get though as they fell 72-68 in a overtime thriller. Brinkma led the Royals with a double double (17 points, 10 rebounds) with five three pointers.

The Royals continue action at home with more GSAC play as they host Benedictine Mesa on Thursday, January 9 at 5:30 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
