Heidt and Gonzalez Record Double Doubles As Royals Win Third in a Row

Gilbert, AZ - The Hope International University women's basketball team (9-11, 3-5 GSAC) won their third game in a row as they took down the Park-Gilbert University Buccaneers 69-56 on Thursday evening on the road in Gilbert, AZ.

The teams traded leads to start the game before a layup and three pointer by Aliyah Gonzalez put the Royals up 11-7 midway through the first quarter. The Buccaneers would make it 11-10 but the Royals stretched their lead back out to 15-10 off buckets from Andrea Javier and Mia Heidt. The Buccaneers didn't let the Royals get away as they would comeback to tie it 15-15 at the end of the first. The Royals seized control in the second as they opened on a 13-2 run led by six points from Faith Brinkman to take a 28-17 lead minutes into the quarter. The Buccaneers would answer with their own run to make it 30-24 with 4:50 to go. Brinkman answered with another bucket by the Royals to make it 32-24 but the Buccaneers kept coming as they pulled within 36-35 at halftime.

The Buccaneers continued their momentum into the third as they retook a 37-36 lead. The Royals would quickly retake the lead on a layup by Amira Austin but the Bucaneers kept it close as the Royals led 40-39 midway through the quarter. The Royals then went on a 7-0 run led by five points from Javier to extend their advantage to 47-39 with 1:49 to go. The Buccaneers didn't let up as they pulled within 47-43 at the end of the third. The Royals got their offense going again to start the fourth as they opened on a 9-2 run led by five points from Gonzalez to stretch their lead to 56-45 with 6:32 to go. The Buccaneers looked for an answer but this time the Royals defense shut them down as the Royals went on to win 69-56. Gonzalez (21 points, 10 rebounds) and Heidt (16 rebounds, 13 points) led the Royals with each recording a double double. 

The Royals continue GSAC action on the road as they head to Mesa, AZ to take on Benedictine Mesa as they look to get back in the playoff hunt on Saturday, February 1 at 11:00 AM.
