Royals Use Big First Quarter to Down Bobcats 71-61

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (6-6) used a big first quarter to close out non conference play with a 71-61 over the UC Merced Bobcats on Thursday afternoon at home in the Darling Pavilion.

The Royals came storming out of the gates on a 13-2 run led by four points from Mia Heidt to seize the early advantage with 5:37 to go. The Royals good start continued as they built a 21-7 lead off a big three from Keira McNamee. The Bobcats looked for a response but the Royals held strong taking a 27-13 lead at the end of the first. The Royals continued to look good early in the second as they extended their lead to 35-20 midway through the quarter off a jumper from Heidt. The Bobcats would eventually rally to cut the Royals lead to 37-29 at the half.

The Royals started the third strong as an Amira Austin layup started a 7-0 run to put the Royals up 44-29 with 7:31 left. The Bobcats didn't give up as they rallied to make it 50-45 but the Royals got the final basket as Andrea Javier laid it in right before the buzzer as the Royals led 52-45 at the end of the third. The Bobcats continued their rally to start the fourth as they made it 54-50 but the Royals kept answering as a jumper by Alexandra Trasara put the Royals up 62-53 with 3:10 to go. The Bobcats kept coming as they got within 64-58 with 1:51 to go. The Royals defense held firm though closing out the game on a 7-3 run as they prevailed 71-61. Austin led the Royals with 14 points on 7-for-10 from the field.

The Royals continue action at home as they open GSAC play against The Master's on Saturday, January 4 at 12:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
