Mathias leads the Royals in Five Set Comeback Over Buccaneers

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International women's volleyball team (9-5, 3-1 GSAC) won their third GSAC home game and second in a row in five sets as they rallied from behind to defeat the Park University Gilbert Buccaneers 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at home in the Darling Pavilion.

The first set was close early on as it was tied 6-6 but the Royals seized control with a 10-1 run led by two kills each from Addie Mathias and Rachel Street along with great serving from Mia Luna to take a commanding 16-7 lead. The Buccaneers didn't give in as they rallied to make it 19-14 but the Royals had all the answers as they went on to win 25-19 off a big kill from Kat Schwab to take a 1-0 lead. The Royals continued their momentum into the second set as they took an early 5-2 lead with a kill by street. Later with the Royals leading 8-6 the Buccaneers turned the set around as they took a commanding 17-9 advantage. The Royals didn't give up as they rallied to make it 19-14 with two more kills from Street. The Buccaneers would call a timeout to regroup but the Royals kept coming as back to back service aces cut their lead to 22-20. The Royals would then get within 24-23 but the Buccaneers pulled off the set win 25-23 to tie it 1-1.

The Buccaneers continued their momentum into the third set as they took an early 10-5 lead. The Royals quickly made it 10-9 but the Buccaneers continued to hold the lead. The Royals would come back several times to tie it as a huge kill by Yale Spoja made it 18-18. The teams would then exchange points before the Royals went on a 5-1 run with kills from Street, Mathias and Cassidy Koffroth to take a 24-20 lead. This time the Buccaneers rallied to tie it and then win it 29-27 and take a 2-1 lead. The Royals looked to stay alive in the fourth set as they raced out to a 9-3 lead led by two kills from Street and two service aces from Koffroth. The Royals kept their foot on the gas as great serving from Mathias with three aces helped extend their lead to 14-4. The Buccaneers tried to rally but the Royals had all the answers as they closed out the set on a 3-0 run with an ace by Mia Luna winning it 25-15 and tying the game 2-2.

The Royals continued their hot serving in the final set as they opened on an 8-1 run with three aces from Stacey Dawes to take a commanding lead. The Buccaneers continued to put up a fight as they closed within 10-5 but the Royals weren't about to allow another comeback as they closed out the game with a kill by Yale Spoja and a service error to win 15-8 and 3-2. Mathias led the Royals with 14 kills, 24 assists and 15 digs.

The Royals continue GSAC action on the road as they head to Surprise, AZ to take on OUAZ on Thursday, October 3 at 6:00 PM.
