Royals Fall Short in Five Set Battle With Spirit

Surprise, AZ - The Hope International women's volleyball team (9-6, 3-2 GSAC) fell short in a five set battle 3-2 to the Ottawa University Arizona Spirit on Thursday evening on the road in Surprise, AZ.

The Royals came out strong in the first set as they took an early 16-14 lead with two kills each from Cassidy Koffroth, Yale Spoja and Addie Mathias. The Spirit answered as they took a 20-16 lead but the Royals answered on a 6-2 run back to back kills from Mathias tying the set 22-22. The Spirit would then take a 23-22 lead but the Royals closed out the set on a 3-0 run with a kill from Kat Schwab sealing a 25-22 set win and putting the Royals up 1-0. The Royals continued their momentum into the second set as a kill by Rachel Holmberg put them up 7-6. The Spirit fought back as they rallied to go up 11-9. They then seized control with a 6-1 run to take a 17-11 advantage. The Royals would quickly call timeout but were unable to rally as the Spirit won 25-16 and tied it 1-1.

The Royals looked to answer in the third set as they went up 11-10 on an ace by Stacey Dawes. The Spirit kept coming though as they seized control going on to take a 20-14 lead. The Royals tried to fight back but the Spirit closed out the set on a 5-1 run to win 25-16 and take a 2-1 lead. The Royals looked to answer in the fourth set as they came out strong on a 7-2 run led by four kills from Koffroth. The Spirit would answer to go up 11-8 but this time the Royals didn't let them get away as they kept the game close coming back to tie it multiple times. Later with the game tied 18-18 the Royals took the lead back with a 4-1 run to take a 22-19 lead. The Spirit tried to answer but the Royals held strong with a kill by Spoja securing a 25-21 win and a 2-2 tie.

For the third straight conference game the Royals went to five sets but this time they couldn't pull off the win as the Spirit took an early 6-3 lead. The Royals would make it 6-5 on back to back kills by Street and Savannah Salter but that's as close as they got as the Spirit went on to win 15-8 and 3-2. Koffroth led the Royals with 16 kills while Dawes led with 21 assists and Naomi Ruiz led with 18 digs.

The Royals continue GSAC action on the road as they head to Glendale, AZ to take on Arizona Christian on Friday, October 4 at 6:00 PM.
