Perez's Winner Stuns Mountaineers in Final Seconds

La Mirada, CA – The Hope International men's soccer team (3-1) won a nail biter in the final seconds as they shutout the Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers 1-0 on Thursday afternoon at home at Biola University in La Mirada, CA.

The Mountaineers controlled the game in the start of the first half as they created several chances but were unable to put a shot on target as the game remained scoreless. The Royals then grew into the game and put the first shot on goal midway through the half with a header by Gonzalo Diaz but the Mountaineers goalie easily saved it. The Mountaineers then had a great chance on the free kick but Milton Herrera came up with a big save to keep the game scoreless. Both teams continued to press for the opening goal with the Mountaineers earning several corner kicks but the Royals defense held firm as they kept them off the board. The Mountaineers also shutdown the Royals offense as the was was all tied 0-0 at the half.

The Royals came out of the break pressing forward as they generated several opportunities but again no one was able to find the finishing touch as the game remained scoreless. The Mountaineers made some adjustments and were able to create a flurry of chances an hour into the game but goalie Berlin Torres came up with several huge saves to keep them off the board. Then with just :11 seconds to go the Royals earned a free kick at midfield and then drew a red card as they were lining up for the free kick. The Royals then cashed in as Torres launched the ball into the box where it hit off a defender before finding Jorge Perez who slotted it home for the game winning goal with :05 seconds to go as they won 1-0. Herrera recorded two saves in the first half while Torres earned the win and had four saves.

The Royals continue action on the road as they open up GSAC play against Life Pacific on Wednesday, September 18 at 12:00 PM in La Verne, CA.
