Royals Sweep Labor Day Tourney Over Sea Beggars and Warriors

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International women's volleyball team (3-3) swept their Labor Day Tournament as they won every set taking down the Providence Christian College Sea Beggars 3-0 before defeating the Westcliff University Warriors 3-0 on Thursday evening at home in the Darling Pavilion.

Game 1:
The Royals got off to a quick start as they raced out to an 11-3 lead led by two kills from Addie Mathias. The Sea Beggars answered with two quick points but the Royals seized back control with a 6-2 run finished off by a kill from Cassidy Koffroth to give the Royals a commanding 17-8 lead. The Sea Beggars tried to rally but the Royals shut them down getting a block from Rachel Holmberg and Yale Spoja to close out the set 25-16 and take a 1-0 lead. The second set was a battle early on as the game was tied 6-6 but the Royals seized control with a 6-1 run led by two kills from Koffroth to take a 12-6 lead. The Sea Beggars rallied to get within 14-12 but that's as close as they got as the Royals regrouped with a timeout and went on a 5-0 run with two service aces from Koffroth to take a 19-12 lead. The Sea Beggars would make it 23-17 but the Royals answered with a kill by Katt Schwab and a forced attack error to win the set 25-17 and take a 2-0 lead. 

The third set was back and forth as the Sea Beggars looked to stay alive. Trailing 13-10 the Royals used a 4-0 run finished off by a Koffroth kill to take a 14-13 lead but the Sea Beggars came right back to lead 18-16. This time the Royals answered for good as they closed out the set on a 9-2 run with kills from Rachael Street and Mathias as they won 25-20 and 3-0. Koffroth led the Royals with nine kills and six aces while Caron Flores led with 13 assists. 

Game 2:
The Royals seized control in the first set with a 6-0 run led by three service aces from Koffroth to take a 9-3 advantage. The Warriors battled back to get within 16-13 but the Royals answered with a 7-2 run led by two Koffroth kills and back to back aces from Mia Luna to take a commanding 23-15 lead as they went on to take set one 25-17 and a 1-0 lead. The Warriors started off set two with a 6-4 lead but the Royals quickly sprang into action with an 8-1 run helped by kills from Koffroth, Street and Mathias to take a 12-7 advantage. The Royals would then pull away to a 20-11 advantage after back to back aces from Stacey Dawes. The Warriors would get back within 20-14 but the Royals held firm closing the set on a 5-2 run to win 25-16 and take a 2-0 lead. 

The Royals stormed out of the gates in set three with a 5-0 run but the Warriors tried to stay alive as they fought back to take a 16-14 lead. The Royals quickly answered with a 6-1 run to retake the lead 20-17. The Warriors would answer to get within one but the Royals weren't about to be denied a sweep as they closed out the set on a 5-0 run with a block by Olivia Zawalick and Koffroth sealing a 25-19 win and a 3-0 sweep. Koffroth led the Royals with eight kills while Stacey Dawes led with 12 assists. 

The Royals will return to action on Thursday, September 5 as they host Providence Christian at 6:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
