Royals Down Sea Beggars 3-1

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International women's volleyball team (4-3) got off to a slow start but surged to a 3–1 win over the Providence Christian College Sea Beggars on Thursday evening with the Royals brand new Cheer team cheering them on at home in the Darling Pavilion.

It was the Sea Beggars who would jump out to an early lead as they opened on a 7-1 run before going on to take a 12-3 advantage. The Royals finally woke up after a pair of service aces by Mia Luna helped the Royals spark a 9-1 run to get within 13-12. The Sea Beggars would make it 14-12 but that's the last lead they had as the Royals went on an 8-0 run led by two kills from Cassidy Koffroth to take a commanding 20-14 lead. The Sea Beggars weren't done as they rallied to make it 24-22 but the Royals held strong as Rachel Street delivered the set winning kill 25-22 to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. The Royals held a slim lead to start the second set but quickly went on a 6-1 run with two kills from Addie Mathias to take an 11-5 lead. The Sea Beggars stayed within five at 15-10 but once again it was all Royals as they seized control with a 6-1 run led by two kills from Koffroth to take a 21-11 advantage. The Sea Beggars didn't go down easily as they rallied to make it 23-20 but the Royals closed out the set with a kill by Judy Juhala and a forced service error to win 25-21 and take a 2-0 lead.

The third set was a battle as the Royals looked to close out the Sea Beggars. The Royals would take an early 10-7 lead, but the Sea Beggars would answer to go up 14-11. The Royals fought back to take a 17-16 lead helped by two kills from Mathias but once again the Sea Beggars answered as they went back up 23-20. The Royals would cut it to 23-22 with an ace by Stacey Dawes but the Sea Beggars would respond with the final two points to win 25-22 and make it 2-1. The Royals once again looked to close things out in the fourth set as they took an early 8-4 advantage off a Mathias kill. The Sea Beggars had other ideas as they rallied to take a 13-9 lead. The Royals slowly but surely cameback as they got within one multiple times before three kills in a row by Yale Spoja put the Royals back ahead 22-21. The Sea Beggars would get a quick answer to tie it but the Royals put to bed any idea of a comeback as they closed out the set on a 3-0 run as a service ace by Mia Luna sealed a 25-22 set win and a 3-1 victory. Koffroth led the Royals with 14 kills while Mathias led with 24 assists and Naomi Ruiz led with 20 digs.

The Royals continue action on the road as they head to Pasadena, CA to take on Simpson and host Caltech beginning at 1:00 PM on Saturday, September 7.
